We are now looking for a Hydrogeologist to join our Hydro Technical team within Rio Tinto Kennecott (RTK) you will identify and characterize hydrologic risks to current operations and future mine development and then effectively communicate the magnitude to site and multi-disciplinary study and project teams.

Our Hydrogeologic division is responsible for providing the technical advice, design and direct water mitigation measures across our Kennecott operations at all stages of mine development, from concept through to feasibility, implementation, and operations

This role is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual, with a passion for surface and groundwater management to contributing to a strong team environment. This position will provide you opportunities to work in multi-disciplinary teams with responsibilities that include 1) depressurization reporting, 2) data visualization, 3) database management, 4) data interpretation, and 5) project work spanning from small remediation projects to larger studies (from Order of Magnitude to Feasibility Studies). This individual will possess an enthusiasm for motivating and mentoring others in the delivery of highly technical work.

Reporting to the Principal Hydrogeologist, you will:
  • Provide technical input into expansion studies for conceptual, order of magnitude, pre-feasibility, feasibility, and life of mine studies to mitigate water-related risks
  • Support surface and groundwater investigations and develop strategic surface and groundwater management plans and monitoring
  • Provide technical input into established hydrological standards and guidelines
  • Assemble and write the quarterly depressurization status reports to identify current depressurization levels against plan
  • Develop depressurization strategies where plan is not being met
  • Assist with maintenance and update the hydrology pore water pressure database system
  • Assist with development of pipeline and infrastructure plans for existing or new pipelines
  • Develop pore water pressures for small scale designs
  • Engage and manage consultants for surface and/or groundwater investigations (including the review of consultant's reports and recommendations) as required
  • Partner with site mining personnel, hydrogeologists, and geotechnical engineers to communicate technical guidance on surface and groundwater water issues
  • Interface with third-party review teams to present technical
  • Coach, mentor and develop the Hydrogeology team

What you will need for this role
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, Hydrology, or Environmental Science
  • Practical experience in surface or groundwater management, design of mitigation structures and the development of surface water management plans
  • Experience in presenting hydrologic assessments and complex technical assessments to a range of stakeholders
  • Strong project management skills and report writing skills
  • Experience with 1D, 2D, and 3D hydraulic and groundwater modelling
  • proficiency in MS office and GIS tools (MapInfo or ArcGIS)
  • A valid and current driver license
  • Post graduate qualifications in engineering, hydrology or water resource management will be beneficial

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Knowledge of pipeline hydraulics
  • Knowledge of well hydraulics
  • Understanding of fractured rock hydrology
  • Object based programing (Python, Java Script, Visual basic)
  • Knowledge and use of a 3D visualization software (e.g. MineSight or Leapfrog)
  • Experience with SQL based databases
  • Experience with HEC-HMS surface watermodeling.

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903, and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
