Looking to take the next step in your career? Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Process Specialist / Consultant to join the pyrometallurgical team in Perth.

Hatch serves the world’s mining and metals industry with studies, design, engineering, development of innovative technologies, and project and construction management through to commissioning and operations for both greenfield and brownfield facilities. Hatch is at the forefront of providing clients with plants to produce materials needed for a low carbon future, Key elements in reducing CO2 emissions are vehicle electrification and mass energy storage using lithium-ion batteries. Amplifying these technologies, the production of rare earth metals for rare earth magnet production enables very significant efficiency gains in electric motors and wind turbines. The industries creating the required metals or metal salts are new, challenging and require innovative approaches. As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Foster the technical development of younger process engineers in an expanding pyrometallurgical team in Perth.
  • Assist in studies and detailed design activities for metals projects for a variety of commodities ranging from nickel, copper, lead, gold, lithium, rare earths and others.
  • Review and lead the development of process flowsheets and deliverables.
  • Review, prepare and coordinate testwork scopes to support project development.
  • Prepare design calculations and develop mass and energy balance models in simulation software, typically METSIM.
  • Provide process design requirements to designers and overview their plant layout developments.
  • Prepare process equipment data sheets and specifications, including technical details and duties as required.
  • Work with the project team to prepare capital and operating cost estimates.
  • Provide technical direction and assign work to designers, technicians and others, as required for various projects.
  • Liaise with vendors, clients, contractor representatives and/or project field personnel as necessary to assist with meeting key project deliverables.
  • Participate in Safety in Design activities including HAZIDs, HAZOPs and Risk Reviews.
  • Participate in business development activities including preparation of engineering fee estimates and proposals and engaging with clients to frame their requirements.


You bring to the role:

  • Minimum 15+ years industry experience.
  • Previous Lead Process Engineer roles ranging from studies to detailed design projects including coordination of process engineers.
  • Strong pyrometallurgical and smelting background.Experience in pyrometallurgical processing of nickel, copper, lead, gold, lithium, rare earths will be highly regarded.
  • Particular expertise in pyrometallurgical equipment (kilns, dryers, fluid bed roasters, off-gas handling equipment, furnaces, converters, other) and flowsheet development.
  • Process experience in either an engineering contracting environment, consultancy organisation in the metallurgical industry or brownfield plant experience.
  • Past commissioning roles, commissioning planning, leading commissioning teams.
  • Recognised qualifications in Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • A commitment to excellence, attention to detail and willingness to work hard alongside highly motivated colleagues
  • Ability to work with teams in flexible work arrangements e.g. timezones, locations.
  • Business development and planning skills
  • RPEQ or Chartered Engineer eligible
