Job Description:
Summary:
Barr is seeking an engineer with familiarity and/or experience with tailings management, geotechnical site investigation, saturated and unsaturated soil mechanics, and water sampling and treatment to join its growing Calgary office. Project work will include providing field and office support and/or engineering analysis and design for complex projects with industrial clients in the oil sands and/or other mining industries; managing small projects (including regular client communication and interface); completing activities associated with large-scale tailings management field programs and complex technical studies; working with project teams to develop plans and execution strategies; conducting tailings studies and assessments; assisting with the preparation of cost estimates and proposals; drafting technical reports; participation in marketing and business development assignments, and performing other duties as assigned by the company. While the position is located in Calgary, periodic travel is required.

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in remote locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction and mining sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste-disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. Safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in geotechnical, environmental, geological, civil, or mining engineering or a related discipline
- 6 or more years of work experience directly related to the job responsibilities described above
- Demonstrated project management and leadership skills and experience related to client management/interfacing, and directing/mentoring junior professional staff
- Experience in the execution of field programs
- Professional Engineer (i.e., P. Eng.) in a Canadian province and certified or have the ability to be certified in Alberta
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients (we ask that candidates please submit a writing sample with their application, such as a cover letter or sample work product)
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills
- A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with multi-disciplinary teams of specialists (especially site operations) to meet client and project needs
- Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project needs; project needs will vary seasonally and over time
- Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship
- Acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge and experience in tailings management within the oil sands industry (knowledge of oil sands tailings physical properties and issues associated with fluid fine tailings management)
- Knowledge and experience in mine reclamation and closure
- Knowledge and experience of industrial processes such as mining, tailings deposition, and/or minerals processing
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary technical projects
- Experience mentoring junior technical staff
- Familiarity with environmental regulations
