At South Deep Mine, the role of the Superintendent: Technical Specialist (Electrical) is an integral part of the SIB leadership team. Drawing off an accomplished people leadership and electrical project track record, the incumbent is responsible for improving and expediting the electrical component of all SIB projects. This includes leveraging the full potential of our people, work processes, practices, and systems technology to deliver world-class and safe sustainable projects, equipment, and mining performance.

Minimum Requirements:
  • An undergraduate qualification (B.Eng./BTech) in Electrical Engineering
  • Have at least 5 years' experience as an Electrical Specialist/Engineer in a mining/underground/project environment
  • Experience in Project Management ( PMP certification)
  • Be in possession of a valid South African driver's license.
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and the environment, as determined by the risk based medical examination at the relevant Gold Fields Occupation Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test
  • Must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or be fully vaccinated by the date of the commencement of employment


Key Competencies:
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical reticulation and infrastructure related to Mining equipment/ Machinery
  • Experienced in management of people in a mining environment
  • Experienced in management of projects in a mining environment


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complying with the Health and Safety policy and practices of the company
  • Conduct Quality Evaluation Audits, electrical assessments and ISO9001:2008 audits, inclusive of periodical audits
  • Provide reported feedback to SIB Manager on Safety, Health, and Environmental metrics, highlighting potential risks
  • Perform quality control on commissioning and decommissioning of electrical components
  • Perform root cause failure analysis on electrical major components
  • Produce technical reports for submission to key stakeholders, i.e., Poor Quality Investigation Reports, Technical evaluation Reports, Status Meeting Reports, Failure Analysis Reports AND Cost-Break-Down Reports
  • Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems.
  • Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement new systems and processes as defined by SIB Manager and enabling integration into other areas
  • Ensuring that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications and technical drawings
  • Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or section requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities.
  • Compiling data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies.
  • Preparing specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials
  • Collaboration with Standards Committee in terms of establishing standards for new equipment and components
  • Supervising or training project team members.
  • Estimating material, labour, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Identify, initiate, and implement improvement Quality projects to increase operational efficiencies and System Reliability.
