Hatch’s Environmental Services Group (ESG) focuses on providing our clients to solutions to their environmental and social challenges. The group works directly with clients or in collaboration with other service areas within Hatch, in developing new business opportunities.

The successful applicant will support the team in air quality impact assessments, air quality regulatory compliance permitting assessments, land development compatibility analysis and air quality monitoring within the mining, energy and infrastructure sectors. This position is intended for a senior specialist with proven experience managing environmental permitting projects and providing technical expertise.

The Role:
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert in atmospheric science and air quality.
  • Collection of technical emission inventory data at client facilities.
  • Conduct scientific and engineering calculations for estimating emission rates.
  • Conduct predictive air dispersion modelling.
  • Contribute to environmental assessments, permitting and approvals, environmental management strategies and plans including research, report writing, field work, data collection and management, statistical analysis and regulatory consultation.
  • Deliver high-quality environmental services to agreed budgets and deadlines.
  • Exercise strong project management skills including preparing workplans, scheduling, budgeting and invoicing, allocating resources, reviewing reports, client liaison, and agency consultation.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory agencies and/or community representatives.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of estimating contaminant emission rates using methodologies such as emission factors, engineering calculations using regulatory guidance manual and published documents from industry associations.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate staff and encourage their personal development goals.
  • Collaborate with Hatch’s business units internally to leverage opportunities with existing clients.
  • Lead and support business development and client engagement, as appropriate including the preparation of proposals.


As the successful candidate, you will bring:
  • Experience in air dispersion modelling of stationary and mobile emission sources using modelling programs such as AERMOD, MOVES, Mobile 6, CALPUFF and CALRoads;
  • Experience with preparation of Emission Summary and Dispersion Modelling Reports in Ontario for both Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) and Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASR) permitting process.
  • Experience with National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) quantification, verification, mitigation, and reduction planning.
  • Experience conducting ambient air quality monitoring field work and report preparation; and
  • Demonstrated interest in the business development process.


You bring to the role:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or relevant science program.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Technical skills in environmental impact assessment and approvals.
  • Experience working in a fast paced, consulting environment.
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) are necessary.
  • Knowledge of federal impact assessment requirements related to climate change.
  • Flexibility to travel periodically.
  • Knowledge of French would be an advantage.
