Our Team:

The Projects & Services team is integral to employee’s safety and Vale’s long-term operating strategy. Members of this team work across different operations to ensure fixed and mobile assets are functioning reliably. Team members of this team are involved in the planning and safe execution of projects from inception to handover to the plants.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Superintendent, Project & Shutdown Management , to join our Thompson, Manitoba team.

As a Superintendent, Project & Shutdown Management, you will be accountable for providing project and shutdown management for his/her defined area of accountability. Project complexity will be typically limited to projects below $30M pa. in spend. The projects portfolio will include managing projects from FEL 1 studies in conjunction with Engineering and Studies team through to detail management from FEL 3 onwards through to project close out. You will provide leadership guidance to project leads in applying the project management framework in a streamline and effective manner. Shutdowns are to be led by this team in partnership with respective operations to ensure efficient and safe execution of scope, schedule, budget and quality.

Additionally, in this position you will:

General
    \t
  • Lead the management of a portfolio of approved Capital, Operating, and Period/Shutdown projects including related commissioning/ops readiness
  • \t
  • Lead and Develop Project Leads, Project Engineer(s), Project Controls Coordinator(s) in line with optimized project and shutdown processes.
  • \t
  • Coordinate communication of contractor usage internally with impacted unions

Safety
    \t
  • Audit safety systems including JHAs, Lift Plans and other safety documents related to the Projects within the portfolio for quality and adherence to standards
  • \t
  • Audit External Service Provider Safety Plan for quality and adherence to standards
  • \t
  • Audit worksite periodically for adherence to Safety Plan and Vale Standards
  • \t
  • Manage the creations and resolution of I.M.s for incidents, conditions and near-misses that occur within the projects
  • \t
  • Manage the Notice of Project application process.
  • \t
  • Develop the Shutdown Safety Strategy in concert with the Safety Department

Scope
    \t
  • Lead, organize and coordinate the scoping, planning and execution of all work occurring during the site Shutdown (Planned Maintenance Period)
  • \t
  • Determine the Project Lead requirements to successfully manage the portfolio of projects/shutdowns in area of responsibility
  • \t
  • Manage the provision of construction coordination for Capital and Operating projects by the Project Leads
  • \t
  • Plan and coordinate internal and external resources required to manage contracts and contractors (i.e. internal resources – with Vale Supervisors; external resources – with contractors)
  • \t
  • Manage the development of scopes of work for non-continuous Project or Shutdown specific contract requirements
  • \t
  • Responsible for the development of project charters

Schedule
    \t
  • Coordinate and resolve the integration of Project/Shutdown work into the Site’s Major Events Schedule with support from peers (Integrated Planning Superintendent and Site Superintendents)
  • \t
  • With support from Project leads ensure adequate representation occurs during the Site Integrated Planning & Shutdown meetings
  • \t
  • Lead the Shutdown readiness meetings for areas of accountability.
  • \t
  • Where necessary design and present for approval the shutdown (temporary) organization to the operations management team. This will include nominating adequate leadership coverage during the shutdown to be successful

Quality
    \t
  • Perform contractor audits for quality, qualifications, compliance, invoice auditing
  • \t
  • Access, analyze, understand and make recommendations regarding plant project and shutdown budget and contract spend information
  • \t
  • Audit end states for quality assurance and operational readiness.
  • \t
  • Review and approving scopes of work presented by project leads prior to commercial tenders.

Cost
    \t
  • Collaborate closely with Service Procurement Group while managing requisitions and performing Technical and Commercial Evaluations
  • \t
  • With support from Manager and peers perform service demand planning of project and shutdown contracts
  • \t
  • Provide guidance on cost management including budgets, forecast and accruals
  • \t
  • Verify that the Contract Management Office is providing appropriate service during contract scope development and demand planning
  • \t
  • Manage the preparation and monitoring of fund request packages (AFE/APC) and follow asset capitalization process with support from other groups as required


About You
    \t
  • You possess a Professional Engineer Designation
  • \t
  • Candidates with suitable experience and an engineering technology diploma may also be considered.
  • \t
  • The ideal candidate will be a designated Project Management Professional (P.M.P)
  • \t
  • A minimum of 8 -10 years demonstrated ability in a Project Management related role
  • \t
  • Previous Supervisory/line leadership experience
  • \t
  • Knowledge and understanding of VPS Technical, project management principles and strategies and strong project management skills
  • \t
  • Maintenance supervision, project implementation, and engineering knowledge
  • \t
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and interpersonal skills
  • \t
  • Must have strong organization and time leadership skills
  • \t
  • High initiative and is able to self-direct to accomplish goals with minimum supervision
  • \t
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • \t
  • Solid financial knowledge to make business cases and decisions
  • \t
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
