Position Overview

Kiewit Power Engineers has an immediate opening for a motivated Civil Engineer to join our growing Underground & Submarine Transmission team in the Power Delivery department in Lenexa, KS. As part of this team of highly specialized design professionals, you will support a variety of underground/submarine transmission and distribution projects ranging from 12kV to 500kV in both engineering detailed design and Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) projects for clients throughout the North America.

You will be part of a growing team that supports all aspects of the project execution process by performing innovative design engineering through brainstorming conceptual designs, performing and/or reviewing calculations, developing plans, scheduling tasks to meet client needs, as well as mitigating risk to ensure smooth and safe construction operations.

Location

This position is based out of our Lenexa, KS office and typically requires less than 25% travel.

Responsibilities

• Lead Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) design according to department and industry standards
• Coordinate project activities with project leads, customer representatives and other stakeholders.
• Prioritize tasks and work or manage multiple projects under budget and time constraints.
• Design and prepare HDD design deliverables for underground transmission lines including HDD design plan and profiles, hydrofracture analysis, conduit pulling loads analysis, material selection, and construction specifications in compliance with safety, environmental and client standards and policies.
• Develop project estimates and schedules, evaluate construction feasibility, design options and criteria for technical merit, and conduct field visits to verify routing conditions and parameters.
• Review drawings from manufacturers and use pertinent information in the production of design drawings.
• Work on the project specific engineering design tasks for underground transmission line civil/structural work.
• Familiar with other trenchless technologies, such as Jack & Bored and micro-tunneling, and civil/structure design for underground transmission line projects
• Perform QA/QC reviews of studies, reports, and construction design packages.
• Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced engineers.
• Work closely with construction, procurement and permitting teams to execute construction projects

Qualifications

Expertise Required:
• Accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering or equivalent
• Minimum 10+ years of HDD experience with HDD design (hydro fracture analysis, pulling tension analysis. etc.) is required.
• EIT licensure or eligibility within the United States. Pursuing PE licensure in the next 12 months
• Experience with engineering design software will be an advantage: this includes AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Mathcad, Pull Planner and Boreaid.
• Understanding of ASTM & ASCE, NAD/NAVD, ASCE, OSHA and any other HDD design related code. And willing to learn basic electrical standards such as: IEC, ICEA, AEIC and NESC
• Experience with working in a team setting
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with individuals at all levels of the organization
• Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams; including substations, overhead transmission, distribution, renewables, generation and oil/gas. Also working with different client and inner Kiewit groups with unique ideologies towards budget, schedule, and quality

Expertise Preferred:
• Master of Science degree in Engineering
• Construction experience with HDD operation is preferred
• Professional Engineer (PE) in Civil Engineering
• Experience with seismic design and finite element analysis
