Position Overview

The Renewables Civil Engineering Lead will be responsible for taking client requested scopes for Solar, Wind, and/or Battery Storage projects to produce an estimate. Core objectives include:

• Functional understanding and interpretation of RFP documents
• Understand and document permitting requirements
• Application of RFP and design standards into the preliminary estimate design
• Application of historical rate and production information
• Evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes
• Foster the development and growth of the estimating department staff through mentoring and improved work processes to meet the needs of our clients and rapidly growing markets

We offer a variety of engineering services, including owner's engineering, project development, detailed engineering and design, construction management and plant services. Our engineering teams bring power projects to life across North America in the following areas:

  • Renewables and new technology
  • Water/wastewater


Location

This position will be based out of our Lenexa, KS office.

Responsibilities

• Develop civil scope for the estimation of utility scale solar, wind, and battery storage projects.
• Work with the estimate team to develop and implement a low bid for estimates.
• A complete review of specifications and project requirements contained in the RFP.
• A detailed understanding of the proposed work and any potential cost or schedule impacts.
• The application of construction best practices and using the extensive Kiewit network to help plan how to build the project.
• Understanding of future engineering requirements and any impacts to the project schedule.
• Evaluating options to develop the low-cost alternatives for bids.
• Communication within the Kiewit Power organization and district offices across the country.
• Train and mentor less experienced estimators and engineers.
• Review estimates prepared by others to determine completeness and resolving estimate differences.
• Use engineering methods to estimate the proposed work and align with standard company procedures and engineering best practices.
• Capable of using engineering methods and company experts to investigate challenges during the bidding process.
• Passion for learning new methods and procedures for building and engineering work in the industry.
• Review of past projects, costs, and the application of data to estimates.
• Communication with managers and team members during the estimate to ensure an accurate and complete estimate.
• Preparation and presentation of the civil scope of the estimate to the Management team.
• Conduct a detailed review of all subcontract and material pricing.
• Prepare preliminary studies or memos as required for unique bid items or conditions.
• Formulate the procurement and subcontracting strategy for the civil scope of the estimate.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited four-year college or university program.
• Engineering in Training (EIT) license
• At least five years' experience in a related role on power or infrastructure projects
• Extensive knowledge through demonstrated experience of heavy industrial construction
• Strong attention to detail; strong communication, interpersonal, leadership and team-building skills
• Excellent negotiation skills
• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Work, Outlook, PowerPoint)
• Experience with computer assisted engineering and design software, preferably Autocad Civil 3D, MicroStation, Geopak and/or drainage calculation softwares is preferred, but not required.
