Job description:
First Quantum Minerals is one of the world's biggest mining companies, employing over 20,000 people.
Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation is our flagship operation in Australia. Located on the beautiful south coast of Western Australia, we are just a short commute from the coastal community of Hopetoun. As a major nickel producer and exporter, we aim to ship up to 30,000 tonnes of nickel concentrate each year via Esperance Port.
Working a 5/2-4/3 roster, this is a residential role located in the seaside town of Hopetoun, WA. The successful applicant will be provided with company housing and a relocation package
The Mine Surveyor is expected to provide support to the Mining Technical Services department, mining contractor and overall site. Daily pit presence in required in order to adequately perform and oversee the surveying tasks efficiently, while ensuring integrity of spatial data.
Working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, the role will also include the responsibility of providing input, and contributing towards operational targets by means of timely and accurate delivery of surveying functions.
Key Accountabilities
  • Taking an active approach to safety to ensure team is in line with the company's values, policies and procedures.
  • Managing the delivery of accurate 3D spatial data and services within mine lease.
  • Assisting with and recommending continuous improvement initiatives within the team
  • Scheduling and prioritising survey tasks by liaising between technical departments and mining contractor.
  • End of month volumetric surveys (mining, blast volumes, long-term stockpiles, ROM, clear and topsoil stripping).
  • Processing daily dig plan face positions - includes pickups, updates and uploads into machine guidance applications.
  • Establishing, extending and verifying Survey Control network to a high standard and in keeping with the regulatory accuracy and requirements.
  • Setting out for mining contractors (pre-strip, haul-roads, dumps and drainage works), geologists (drill hole collars, either for production or exploration).
  • Use spatial data to create and prepare plans and drawings for various regulatory bodies.
  • Implement any necessary slope monitoring control for the open cut operation, in accordance with the Mining and Safety act.
  • Project planning for aerial surveys- to include area to be mapped, target implementation, horizontal and vertical datum controls.
  • Facilitate the development and training of survey technicians
  • Perform any other duties as directed by supervisor.
    Skills, Knowledge and Experience
    • Degree or Diploma in Mining and Mineral Technology (Surveying or equivalent)
    • Holds or must be able to obtain a WA Authorised Mine Surveyor's Certificate Grade 2
    • Minimum 4 years' experience working in open pit mines
    • Remote Pilot's Licence and UAV operational experience
    • Experience with machine guidance systems desirable
    • Must hold a current "C" Class Drivers Licence
    • English language proficiency required
    • The ability to be flexible with work output and have effective organisational skills to meet the daily production requests is essential
    • Very good practical, planning and prioritising skills with the ability to build on the experience gained
    • Good written/ verbal communications and interpersonal skills
    • Proficiency with Deswik (highly desirable), PointStudio, ArvGIS and PIX4D, or other generalised mining and photogrammetry packages.
