About this role

  • Management of the breadth of scope of the role will require management of multiple priorities including tackling of complex, diverse and conflicting operational design objectives.
  • The role is responsible for providing mining engineering and mine planning services to meet the business needs of the study/project pipeline and in support of existing operations at Newmont, in particular related to Long-term Planning work packages such as Life of Asset (LoA) planning and reserves and resources delivery.
  • The role performs complex engineering duties on Projects and Operations with significant business impact to Newmont. The role encompasses a range of engineering and technical activities, involving some or all of the steps from identifying substantial technical problems and opportunities; through devising engineering approaches processes and plans to resolve them; to researching, justifying, acquiring and assembling the resources to generate the mine plans. The role might include leading teams or cooperating with other disciplines to obtain a solution that is optimal to Newmont.
  • The role will be expected to contribute to the development and implementation of standards, guidelines, and best engineering practices for application to Newmont projects and operations.
  • The position will support the site Long term planning teams in delivering long term mine planning work packages, including long term mining aspects of business planning, support of site based studies, projects, Full Potential and Strategic Resource Development activities


Your role will consist of

  • Provide visible and felt leadership in support of health, safety, security and S&ER programs including maintaining a high focus on safety within the Long-term Planning Function and actively promoting Newmont's safety standards during all site visits,
  • Provide support for delivery of key LTP work packages, including; Reserves and Resource annual reporting as per Newmont's standards and guidelines for reporting to the SEC. Long-term options for LoA planning purposes; supporting collaboration between LTP and site engineering teams in developing the annual Business Plans, Mine design, long-term facilities design and planning, Life of Asset infrastructure and reclamation and closure planning.
  • Complete economic evaluation of Open pit mining operations to maximize the value of the business, and look for opportunities to replicate best practices across sites and studies, including consideration of safety in design.
  • Support the Mine Engineering functional work in the development and completion of conceptual, pre-feasibility, feasibility or final design level studies of mining projects. These studies involve development of novel approaches in situations where there are conflicting design requirements, difficulties in scheduling, problematic interactions or challenges of coordination resulting in complex consequential effects on projects or operations
  • Provide mining engineering skills to support studies and projects, M&A evaluations and due diligence teams as required. Use highly developed engineering and modeling capability; mine design, planning and scheduling skills; sound knowledge of resource geology, geotech, hydrology; Truck and shovel operations and alternate bulk materials movement methods and financial analysis techniques in making such assessments. Where necessary identifying and acquiring skills from consultants, managing them to ensure the quality and timeliness of results.
  • In pursuit of improvement and value addition, systematically assess, evaluate, validate and/or audit engineering work of others and digest information relevant to a problem or project. Conduct risk and opportunity reviews in a cross-functional context. Perform detailed research on areas of particular interest or concern, or to remove material uncertainty or doubt.
  • Recommend, where appropriate, modifications to mine engineering and long-term planning practice. Develop novel approaches to overcoming constraints and obstacles where there may be conflicting design requirements, difficulties in scheduling, problematic interactions or particular challenges of coordination. Report and present summaries arising from such analysis and provide advice on implementation of modifications, improvements, plans of action and remedies
  • Work with other functional groups to adopt and test new Long Term Planning processes and tools to improve Long Term Planning/strategic planning practices.
  • Support strategic components of Full Potential and SRD work as required to meet business needs.
  • Apply advanced mining engineering skills to situations of design or operational complexity. This includes the selection, implementation and modification of software and recommendation/input on new technology; and contribution to relevant research and development
  • Be responsible for ensuring that Continuous Improvement and Innovation are applied in the mine engineering and long-term planning function. Communicate these developments and leverage from the learning's at other Newmont operations and projects.


Your training, skills, and experience checklist

  • Tertiary Qualification in Mining Engineering, advanced degree in Mine Engineering a plus.
  • Appropriate years of experience in Open pit mine planning, optimization, operations and strategic planning in large and diversified mine sites, with preference for experience in conventional hard rock Gold / Copper-Gold operations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to influence and impact in a dynamic, multitasking environment with competing priorities and high level of cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Experience in operations with complex multi mine / process situations preferable and seasoned knowledge of mine methods, mine design, production scheduling (strategic and tactical), equipment selection, reserve estimation, maintenance and expert systems.
  • High level of competence in the use of mine planning software, including optimal techniques and cash flow analysis and extensive experience with mine design and scheduling packages from Deswik, Geovia Whittle, MineSight, or Vulcan and other open pit software.
  • Detailed knowledge of unit costing for resource and reserve analysis and experienced in financial analysis and models. Experience with Xeras cost estimating a plus.
  • Knowledge of exploration methods and resource estimation.
  • Strong problem solving and 3D visualization skills.
  • Relevant certificates of competency - certification as Professional Engineer, and/or Qualified-Competent Person status.


Working conditions and location

  • The position is located in the Denver corporate office but may be open to flexible home location working arrangements.
  • Regardless of location, employee would be required to travel to sites in the US, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Suriname, Argentina and other international destinations as business needs require.

This position is responsible to the Regional Director Long-term Planning.

Effective execution of the job requires constant interaction/communication with directors, business planners, technical and operational managers, and mining / geology / metallurgy and others from the corporate, regional and site groups.

The salary range offered for this role is $ 117,895 - 145,635 . The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. The salary offer will not be based on a candidate's salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company's performance and their own individual performance.
