About the role

An excellent opportunity exists for a Sr. Engineer/PM to manage projects and work closely with and in support of the Project Team and Owners Team. Oversee and coordinate project work activities in the execution of capital approval, engineering, planning, integration with operations, construction, permitting, quality assurance, pre-commissioning, and commissioning. Coordinate day-to-day work scope between other contractor teams and active operations and manage direct reports. Projects will be primarily focused on maintaining and/or upgrading the Smelter's sulphuric acid plant, including heat exchangers, electrostatic precipitators, heat recovery systems, and other supporting equipment.

This role is a great opportunity to demonstrate your project management leadership and technical skills. Working five days on, two off roster (outside of shutdown periods) and reporting to the Principle Engineer - Acid Plant Shutdown
  • Work alternate work and days off schedules, shifts, and shift hours as required to complete shutdown/turnaround activities
  • Ensure projects are implemented safely
  • Be part of a dynamic and high performing team, executing large and complex industrial shutdown/turnaround projects
  • Ensure successful and safe execution of projects through detailed planning and understanding of the Acid Plant area by creating scopes of work in compliance with the following:
    • RTKC HSE standards and programs
    • RTKC Contractor Management standards
    • RTKC Permitting processes
    • RTKC Project Framework including the development of CAPEX & OPEX presentations and approvals through project execution
    • Construction Contract scope, schedule, and cost
    • Engineering and Design specifications and quality
  • Support the project team in the development and execution of the following:
    • RTKC HSE and Contractor Management documentation
    • Scope of Work documents
    • Project Execution Plan documents
    • Quality Assurance/Commissioning Execution Plan documents
    • Quality Assurance/Commissioning forms and documentation
    • Construction, Pre-commissioning, and Commissioning Schedules

  • Provide subject matter expert guidance for the facility's gas cleaning equipment, heat exchangers, electrostatic precipitators, heat recovery systems, and other equipment involved in extracting sulphuric acid from the smelter's furnace offgasses.
  • Suggest opportunities for improvements, innovations, and introduce new technologies
  • Regularly working with key stakeholders to drive a culture of collaboration, participation, and continuous improvement
  • Manage and provide guidance and assistance to new short term personnel, who have no prior Sulfuric Acid Plant experience, to plan, prepare and implement shutdown/turnaround projects safely and efficiently
  • Use specialized Personnel Protective Equipment including acid protective suits, full coverage supplied-air acid protective suits, and supplied-air respirators when inspecting and managing work activities

What you'll bring

To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Engineering degree is preferred, although other relevant combination of education and experience will be considered
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in leading people and executing work safely.
  • A minimum of 5-10 years in heavy industry
  • Excellent communication skills and stakeholder engagement
  • Proactive and self-driven, able to handle multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and flexibility
  • Experienced in developing and maintaining collaborative relationships and providing team coaching
  • Regulated work area procedures and standards
  • Critical Risk Management and practices
  • Experience in Project Management, Construction, Quality Assurance, Pre-commissioning and Commissioning

Desired Skill Sets:
  • Experience with operational personnel coordination
  • Complex organization solving with process and construction solutions
  • Industrial construction work management; Piping, pumps, precipitator, fiber-reinforced plastic, heat exchangers, sulphuric acid plane equipment, civil, mechanical, electrical, etc
  • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills - incident management
  • Extensive construction, quality assurance, pre-commissioning and commissioning experience
  • Experience preparing capital expenditure authorizations, and justification strategies to support project viability
  • High level of schedule development, scope development and management experience
  • Word processing, Spreadsheet Management, Email management (Microsoft products)

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter, and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States.
