About the role

All progress begins with pioneers. At Rio Tinto, it begins with you.

We are currently looking for a Mechanical Engineer to assist with the commissioning and ramp up of the Gudai-Darri process plant and supporting non-processing infrastructure.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain invaluable commissioning experience and help shape the future of Gudai-Darri. The role will suit motivated and self-starting individuals who can apply their knowledge of RTIO standards and best practice to ensure operational excellence can be achieved for the current assets and the future expansion currently in a Feasibility study (Phase 2). The role will cover the Fixed Plant and Non-Processing Infrastructure assets on the site which are in various stages of operation.

Reporting to the Principal Commissioning & Specialist Mechanical, you will:
  • Establish systems on how to capture valuable information during the commissioning process to inform the Phase 2 feasibility study lessons learnt
  • Identify, record, monitor, and provide solutions to remedy issues with processing and non-processing infrastructure (Go, Look, See methodology)
  • Assist the commissioning team in their plan to ramp up the operations, helping to document and report on progress
  • Working with stakeholders (EPCM, OEMs) in the transfer of knowledge and learnings for the operational and maintenance teams
  • Providing input into the Phase 2 Feasibility study, feeding lessons learnt into the definitive engineering design of the future assets
  • Being a point of contact on site for Phase 2 Operational readiness, to assist with queries from the GD2 EPCM and Study team members.

The role will transition into a Perth based role within the Phase 2 Operational Readiness team at the completion of the commissioning program (towards the end of 2022).

What youll bring

You will have:
  • Proven ability to plan and manage project based work with a keen eye for detail
  • Solid working knowledge of RTIO standards and work procedures/guidelines
  • Willingness to investigate and understand issues and recommend actions
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to develop a rapport with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a high functioning team
  • A knack for thinking about how the parts of a system and project work together
  • Using systematic approaches to analysing problems, recording findings and documenting them to inform future decisions

Where you will be working

This position is based at our Gudai-Darri Operations, working on an 5/2/4/3 Weekdays roster from Perth, with every 2nd Friday in Perth.

Our $2.6 billion Gudai-Darri iron ore project is set to be our most technologically advanced mine. In addition to technology already in use across Rio Tinto, such as autonomous trucks, trains and drills, Gudai-Darri has more than 70 design innovations in scope.

When fully operational, in its first phase, Gudai-Darri will produce up to 43 million tonnes of iron ore a year, contributing to our flagship product, the Pilbara Blend. It will also become a new production hub for our iron ore business, incorporating a processing plant and infrastructure including a 166-kilometre rail line connecting the mine to our existing network.

Gudai-Darri will also create jobs and business opportunities in Western Australia, including for Traditional Owners and Indigenous people. The construction phase will create over 2,000 jobs; when operational, we expect the mine to employ about 600 people.
