  • Make your mark on the future of a major iron ore precinct in Guinea, West Africa
  • Manage the detailed engineering effort to support the execution of a multi-billion-dollar, 50Mtpa iron ore mine and supporting infrastructure.
  • Role located in project office in London - travel to project site in Guinea and project offices of the engaged Engineering Service Providers (ESPs) required

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Simandou Team. As the Engineering Manager for the Simandou Project, you are the Rio Tinto (RT) Owner's Representative for managing the detailed engineering scope for the 50Mtpa iron ore mine located in Guinea, West Africa. You will be responsible for managing a team of discipline engineering leads within the Owner's Team along with the respective Engineering Service Provides delivering engineering for the mine component of the project along with managing critical interfaces with the project teams executing the port and rail scopes required for the project.

The project scope includes an open cut mine and supporting Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) infrastructure, crushing and conveying systems, stockyard including stacking and reclaim balance machines, train load out facilities and non-processing infrastructure to support a large-scale, remote green fields iron ore mine. The role reports directly to the GM Engineering within RT Projects group with a dotted line reporting structure to the Simandou Project Director.

Key accountabilities of the role are:
  • Developing the execution plans and strategy for detailed engineering based on the scope requirements and schedule
  • Applying disciplined governance and quality assurance across all aspects of the engineering function for the Simandou project.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to drive a culture of collaboration, participation, and improvement.
  • Managing and developing the performance of the team in line with Rio Tinto's company values, to achieve objectives, including Zero Harm.
  • Managing the performance of key Engineering Service Providers (ESPs) to ensure engineering is prioritised and delivered to meet the agreed construction schedule
  • Identifying and mitigating key project risks and maximising opportunities for the project.
  • Proactively manage the project's compliance related activities related to the engineering function.
  • Provision of all engineering deliverables to support government permitting requiremetns

What you'll bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Experience in engineering management is critical. Ideally the candidate's background will be in large scale, surface iron ore mining operations.
  • Experience delivering projects in difficult jurisdictions such as West Africa will be highly regarded
  • It is critical that the candidate can quickly digest the significant body of engineering that has been completed to date and take responsibility for the management of the remaining engineering which is in excess of 1 million hours.
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills and business acumen
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills - French language skills will be highly regarded
  • An ability to liaise with external and internal stakeholders at all levels in within a major corporation effectively while delivering business growth in a safe sustainable way.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Would consider Engineering Management skills from other large scale, base metal mining operations are accepted if the candidate had strong bulk materials handling experience and/or extensive West African experience.

Where you'll be working

The role of Senior Manager Engineering - Simandou Mine is a member of the senior leadership team for the Simandou project which is based in London, UK. The project also has an office in Conakry, Guinea and a project office at the mine site near Beyla located approx. 650km East of Conakry in the Simandou Ranges.

The project is owned by Simfer S.A. which is a joint venture owned by Rio Tinto (45.05%), Chinalco (39.95%) and the Government of Guinea (15%). Rio Tinto is the nominated operator of the Simandou ore block 3 and 4. Blocks 3 an 4 in the Simandou ranges represent one of the most significant untapped, high grade iron ore deposits today, with an indicated resource in excess of 1.7Bt.

The mine will create several thousand direct and indirect jobs, with an economic value of several billion dollars over the estimated mine life. Simandou will also serve as an engine for economic growth, and use best practices to create a safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly operation. The iron ore from the mine will be used to produce vital products that modern society depends upon, such as electric vehicles, renewable energy infrastructure, buildings and bridges.
