Position Overview

Kiewit Industrial Engineering (K-IND) is seeking a Mid to Senior-Level CHP Utilities Systems Engineer. Candidates shall have a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in CHP utilities systems engineering and conceptual design, including specific experience with combined heat and power, district energy, campus utility, medical centers or other similar industrial facilities involving power generation, steam heating and thermal distribution systems, chilled water and associated transmission/distribution systems. Candidates must understand the latest technologies and applications to improve efficiency and resiliency, and renewable technologies to drive towards carbon neutral facilities and cost-effective solutions. Candidates shall be familiar with current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software with an understanding of design documentation creation and layouts.

Our rapidly growing Kiewit Industrial Engineering team, which includes process, mechanical, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on EPC and design-build delivery of industrial projects in markets such as Utilities (including CHP and Industrial Power), Food & Beverage, Mineral Processing, Renewable Fuels, Pulp and Paper, Steel & Aluminum, Industrial Buildings, and Industrial Energy and Water.

Location

This position is located at our industrial hub in Lenexa, KS and may require occasional travel based on project demands.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the company subject matter expert for combined heat and power applications and implementation for our industrial utility markets. Provide key technical input and management for all combined heat and power scopes throughout project development, estimating, project execution, and startup/commissioning.
  • Provide design, coordination, and oversight of various utilities systems typical for combined heat and power, district energy, campus utilities, medical centers or other industrial facilities. Candidate should have specific experience in the following: central energy plants, steam and hot water heating, chiller plants and electric and thermal distribution systems, both direct buried and tunnel networks.
  • Prepare equipment specifications and detailed technical bid analyses for typical combined heat and power, district energy, campus utility, medical centers for equipment including but not limited to combustion turbines, boilers, chillers, turbines, pumps, valves, and other equipment typical for utilities systems.
  • Analyze various technologies and applications to tailor for each project requirements, including low or neutral carbon facilities, thermal distribution units, alternative fuels, geothermal applications, including current and future technical solutions.
  • Generate and check design deliverables such as PFD's, P&ID's, datasheets, and vendor shop drawings in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
  • Support the construction team including representing the design team on-site, answering RFI's, providing creative design solutions, etc.
  • Coordinate, communicate, and oversee all aspects of the project's systems design with other design partners (both internal and external), construction partners, and equipment suppliers.
  • Proven collaborative client experience and communication skills are mandatory to conduct client meetings and updates, design reviews, interfaces and action item resolutions.
  • Provide technical oversight and coordination of projects, working with the assigned design managers and project managers, to meet project budgets and schedules.
  • Perform early project design work such as conceptual studies, process flow diagram development, mass/energy balances, preliminary equipment sizing and selection, and general facility layout/arrangement.
  • Train, mentor, and advise peers and support staff on proper application of combined heat and power for various clients and applications within industry standards and best practices.
  • Support the general engineering activities required to provide a complete turn-key design or supervise specialty CHP design subcontractors to ensure compliance with the engineering specifications.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent engineering program from an ABET accredited four-year university.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of CHP engineering experience.
  • A broad understanding of district energy, campus utility, and combined heat and power technologies and the market overall.
  • Specific experience in transmission and distribution system design associated with district energy, campus utility, and combined heat and power facilities.
  • System operations and/or commissioning experience is favorable.
  • Proficient in thermal performance modeling of CHP systems.
