We offer several designated marshalling points within BC including Nanaimo, Vancouver, Kelowna, Kamloops, Williams Lake, Prince George, Smithers, and Calgary, AB.

The Manager - Sustainability is accountable for the safe, efficient and cost-effective leadership of the Environment and Communities functions at Red Chris in alignment with the business strategy and goals to maintain and enhance the company's relations and reputation with government, regulators and local communities to ensure the continuity of the Social Licence to Operate of current and future operations.

Accountabilities:

Accountable for leading, developing and maintain within the Sustainability Department a business focused high performance culture supported by effective systems, standards and procedures to enable continuous improvement in environmental responsibility, community relations and sustainable development whilst ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and Impact, Benefit and Co-Management Agreement (IBCA) obligations.

Key accountabilities responsibilities and deliverables include:
  • Ensuring the safe, environmentally and culturally sensitive execution of all activities.
  • Effective safety and health management across areas of accountability through high standards of housekeeping, applying critical controls and proactive elimination of hazards
  • Accountability for performance of the Sustainability Department to ensure overall quality execution of tasks/services and interactions with our partner communities and government agencies including maintaining currency of all permits.
  • Driving operational and cost discipline in alignment with business priorities and expectations through clearly defining expectations, ensuring understanding, verifying that expectations are delivered on and leading by example.
  • Delivering a mutually beneficial relationship between our operations and the Communities such that present and future business opportunities are maximised and potential for disruption to operational activities are minimised.
  • Establishing a culture of respect for Communities and Environment through minimising impacts by ensuring site and business partners respect our impacted communities their cultures, traditions and leaders and stakeholders.
  • Complying with legislation, policy and standards for fauna and flora, land clearance, hydrocarbon and hazardous materials management, ground and surface water management, emissions and discharges, erosion control, waste disposal and recycling. Promptly reporting and remediating non compliances, spillage and disturbance
  • Ensuring that work that may impact the communities only proceeds following appropriate engagement and consultation.
  • Abiding by company community and environmental policies, standards, procedures and processes, all relevant national regulations, laws and the IBCA.
  • Procative engagement with Government and First Nation agencies to facilitate audits, meetings, respond to information requests, close review actions and maintain robust relationships.
  • Implementing a risk-based Community Engagement Strategy and supporting Plan (CEP) to ensure regular dialogue with local communities. Apply this and socio-economic data to address community concerns, needs and aspirations whilst delivering a consistent and realisable message aligned to company objectives.
  • Consulting and engagement with the communities, local and regional authorities to develop a Community Development Strategy and supporting Plan (CDP) that balances community needs and company objectives
  • Defining and pursuing a Sustainable Communities Strategy and Plan (SCP) aligned to Newcrest corporate sustainability objectives to guide long term and life of mine community development initiatives through to mine closure.
  • Establishing and pursuing a Sustainable Environment Strategy and Plan (SEP) to guide long term and life of mine environment management and rehabilitation initiatives through to and post mine closure. Integrate with the site Sustainable Futures Strategy and Plan (SFP) for social closure at the end of mine opperations.
  • Ensuring that current and future operations have the appropriate Environmental Regulatory approvals and that operations are appropriately managed to maintain compliance with those approvals and permits.
  • Establishing, implementing and maintaining all components of the Environmental & Social Management System to effectively comply with and continuously improve on delivering against environmental and social obligations through planning, implementation, monitoring and review of environmental risks and opportunities
  • Defining, implementing and maintaining Environmental management plans and procedures supported by monitoring and escalation processes to ensure that all activities are undertaken in compliance with environmental obligations, National and Local legislation, regulations and permits. Observed actual and potential non-compliances are swiftly and corrected addressed without adverse impact on the environment. Provide timely, accurate and appropriate responses and support to operations on emergent environmental issues and provide environmental advice to effectively manage change to ensure that the business is not deliberately or inadvertently subjected to unnecessary operational, commercial or legal risks.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate implementation of environmental monitoring programs; including air and water, waste, land management and rehabilitation programs.
  • Reporting to government agencies and corporate that is accurate and submitted in a timely manner; and as a minimum, provide detailed quarterly and annual reporting of environmental performance to site and corporate leadership.


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree or vocational qualifications in one or more of Environment or Community Relations related studies
  • Culturally sensitive and experienced in working with Canadian First Nations communities
  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience working in an industry role in environment and sustainability
