Fortescue is now consistently producing 175-180 million tonnes of iron ore per year and has an exciting future ahead as it diversifies from a pure play iron ore producer to a green renewables and resources company.

The company is scheduled to commence production at its Iron Bridge magnetite mine in mid-2023.

Iron Bridge is Fortescue's US$2.6 billion project, set to deliver 22mtpa of high grade 67% Fe magnetite concentrate product. Located 145km by road south of Port Hedland, the mine will deliver an innovative process design and industry-leading energy efficient operation.

Pipeline Engineer

Work Location: Fortescue's Iron Bridge project is located on the traditional lands of the Nyamal people.

Roster: 8:6 (first 6-9 months will be Mon-Fri based in Perth)

Summary of role

This is a rare opportunity to get in at the ground level as a key person involved with the maintenance and operation of what will be Australia's longest iron ore pipeline. The role also extends to providing support to an extensive network of water infrastructure including a 200 km raw water pipeline. The role also covers process piping conveying more than 470 GL/annum of water which is more than the annual water usage of Perth which is 420 GL/a.

The pipeline Engineer will be part of the wider Engineering & Reliability team which is composed of experienced professionals with a winning attitude. The role reports to the Senior Pipeline Engineer. The role will initially be Perth based and moving to site based within the next 12 months, subject to the requirements of the Business.

The role requires knowledge of various piping and pipeline materials, associated codes and maintenance practices as well as knowledge of associated equipment such as pumps, valves and other infrastructure.

The role supports and operations and maintenance of the Iron Bridge concentrate pipeline, process plant piping maintenance, water supply pipelines and infrastructure as well as the tailings pipelines.

The role covers:

  • Asset lifecycle planning, maintenance strategy advice / development, defect elimination
  • Reliability engineering support for operational activities to Ironbridge operations
  • Technical support in project feasibility, detailed design, asset standardization and procurement, commissioning
  • Targeted Failure mode and Effects analysis to eliminate downtime and unscheduled maintenance

Essential Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years with engineering of piping and pipeline in mining or related industries. (Also 1.5 years of site experience).
  • A Bachelor's in engineering (Mechanical or Civil/Structural preferred) or equivalent (Trade + additional qualifications)
  • C-class manual Driver's license (unrestricted)

Highly Regarded Skills:
  • Good verbal and written communication, interpersonal, facilitation, negotiation, and presentation skills, with strong data analysis
  • Good problem-solving skills and continual improvement focus
  • Ability to engage stakeholders, both internal and external to FMG across various levels in the business
  • Workshop facilitation skills, and strong Project Engineering/Management experience
  • Proven Implementation skills with track record
  • Ability to coach members of a technical team

Desirable Skills:

  • RCA (root cause analysis)
  • GIS
  • 3D Drafting Skills
  • Slurry and Water Hydraulic Calculation and Analysis
  • Greenfield and Brown Fields Construction
  • SAP literacy
  • Visual Basic or Python
