Downer has been designing, building and sustaining New Zealand's infrastructure for over a century and is a leading provider of integrated services in Australia and New Zealand.

With over 10,000 employees in New Zealand, we work alongside some of New Zealand's biggest businesses, councils and government agencies.

The Downer Transport Waikato Construction team is looking for a skilled and confident people leader to join as a Construction Operations Supervisor. A great opportunity due to business growth and reshaping, you'll gain exposure to a range of projects across the Waikato area. This involves overseeing the operational delivery and support to construction projects for contracts across the Waikato, optimizing resources and maintaining a safety focus, training and development of field staff and being a central part of developing and growing construction team.

About the role:

Based from our Te Rapa depot in Hamilton, you will manage and lead the field crew teams who operate constructing retaining structures, drainage upgrades and pavement realignments, bulk earthworks and concrete works to name a few. You will encourage collaboration, enthusiasm and excellent service delivery. Day to day you will:
  • Manage and coach your team to enhance their skills and career prospects to future-proof the Waikato construction space
  • Lead by example with regards to health & safety guidelines and procedures, ensuring understanding & compliance
  • Lead training and development across all field crews including supervisors
  • Ensure work is completed to a high standard and all targets (productivity, quality, cost and safety) are met in line with Project Managers
  • Assist with the development of monthly resource plans and share with the wider team
  • Be involved in tenders and offer guidance for operational methods

Benefits of joining our team:
This is an established role with scope to make it your own. We are focused on creating a vibrant community of belonging that pursues diversity, builds inclusion, and creates more equitable opportunities for everyone. We can offer:
  • A competitive salary package plus a company vehicle
  • An environment that supports flexible working
  • An employee recognition programme which celebrates and recognises our people for the value they bring
  • A dedicated personal development plan and over 50 Training Programs including Leadership Pathways (we are big on internal progression - which is the reason for this vacancy!)
  • We also encourage our people to participate in community volunteering initiatives and pay for the time you spend helping to make our community better with Downer's volunteer leave.
  • A comprehensive employee benefits package through our partners - you will receive a great range of corporate discounts and benefits across banking, insurance, retailers, technology, vehicles, automotive, healthcare, childcare, homeware, dental care, travel, accommodation, gym memberships and more!

About you:

You will be a confident leader with supervisory experience behind you. You will have good organisation skills and the ability to adapt to change and problem solve as changes can (and often do) occur in this environment. We'd also value:
  • Experience in roading infrastructure or the contracting industry
  • Proven strong people leadership experience with an ability to influence, empower people
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt your style to maintain relationships at all levels
  • Strong Information Technology skills
  • Demonstrated experience working on tight deadlines and within budgets

This not a faint-hearted role and requires resilience but is definitely rewarding at the end of the day and gives you the opportunity to make a difference in your community. If you're ready for your next challenge and would like to join a company where people are the number one asset, we want to hear from you!

What's in it for you?
A role with Downer New Zealand that can advance your career and expand your skills. We offer you the opportunity to join our diverse and inclusive culture, and be part of a great team, working in a collaborative environment as well as;
  • Competitive salary with a company vehicle
  • Tools of trade including PPE gear and phone
  • Plenty of opportunities to build relationships with the community
  • Scope for internal and external training & development programmes
  • Opportunity to work on some unique and exciting projects
