The Contruction Manager is responsible for managing, coordinating and administering the construction project during its planning, setup, execution, monitoring and controlling and close-out phases. Responsible to deliver the project within the scope, cost and schedule baseline, and ensure that the project is delivered within the safety, quality and environmental best practices set out by Hatch and the client for the project.

The projects or project portfolios are typically in the mining, metals, energy or infrastructure sectors, with projects sites at remote locations in Africa

Key Responsibilities
  • Displays and actively promotes behavior aligned to Hatch’s goal of achieving a total safety culture by:
  • Visible Felt Leadership.
  • Participating in investigation of all serious incidents reported and ensuring that all follow-up actions are carried out.
  • Participating in audits of work areas.
  • Attending all identified safety training.
  • Acting as a mentor for the implementation of Hatch safety standards to contractors.
    • Develops and obtains sign-off from client on Construction Management Plan (CMP).
    • Develops and resources an appropriate construction organization structure, and ensures that the entire project team has the required resources for the work.
    • Provides leadership to the project and creates a highly committed and aligned team environment with all who can influence the project’s outcomes.
    • Ensures governance on the project, specifically compliance to Hatch and client delegations of authority, procedures and policies, project reviews.
    • Develops a detailed construction scope, cost and schedule control baseline, and manages any project changes in terms of this agreed control baseline.
    • Establish good relationships with the client and managing the client.
    • Carries clear responsibility and accountability for delivery of the project goals as set down by the client/project manager/director.
    • Monitors and controls all contractual commitments to assure that all work is being performed in accordance with the specifications, drawings, terms of the contract and client expectations.
    • Conducts regular project progress and client meetings to review the progress and issues in all disciplines of the project.
    • Establishes and ensures that the processes for effective scope control (i.e. Trend and Change Management) for the project are in place and that these processes are agreed by the client and they are managed in accordance with Hatch Best Practice.
    • Establishes and manages processes for the early identification of any potential changes to the Hatch prime contract and ensures that those changes are identified to the client. Ensures that appropriate contractual changes are formally authorized by the client.
    • Ensures that Hatch’s standard suite of tools and procedures are properly set-up and deployed at the project.
    • Establishes project field procedures and objectives withincorporate policies and procedures as necessitated by jobsiteconditions
    • Manage interfaces, integration and coordination between different construction contractors
    • Review and approve construction estimates, budgets,forecasts and schedules
    • Review construction/erection drawings and specifications,
    • develop strategies for erection interfaces, determineappropriate construction methods and pre-empt problemareas
    • Ensure the necessary permits and licenses (notice of project,insurance certificates, workers compensation, environmentalpermits etc.) are identified and obtained prior to the start ofconstruction activities on site
    • Liaison between Contractor and Engineers to resolve fieldengineering queries
    • Develop site organization and staffing requirements requiredto execute construction activities within project schedule andacceptable costs
    • Ensure adherence to all local regulations and statutoryrequirements in site activities planning
    • Assist the procurement team to review contractualagreements with clients, suppliers, and contractors
    • Liaise with client representatives as required to ensureshutdowns, relocations, tie ins, etc. are planned safely and ina timely manner with minimum disruption
    • Recommend requirements for construction resources and strategies to meet the schedule in each area
    • Participates in the labor studies, manpower sourcing exerciseand the establishment of the industrial relations strategy
    • Work with Contract Administrator to ensure contractorsadhere to the requirements of their contracts
    • Assist with management of Contractor claims
    • Chair Contractor progress, cost and safety meetings
    • Obtains client's acceptance of the work and sign-off for the completed construction works.
    • Ensures compliance to the project Environmental and Safety Management Plan.
    • Strong communications with the client and the project team.


    Qualifications and Experience

    Essential
    • National Diploma/University degree in engineering or other relevant discipline.
    • Greater than fifteen years’ experience in cross functional leadership roles in a project delivery environment of which greater than 7 years should be in Construction Management
    • Experience in the EPCM mining and construction environment
    • Demonstrated health and safety management focus inthe construction phase of project delivery, and extensiveknowledge of health and safety management procedures,safe work practices, and applicable legislation
    • The ability to evaluate, understand, apply, grow, and mentor the Hatch team
    • Ability to function well in a team environment
    • The ability to produce project reports and documentation
    • Coordination, organization and planning of community and industrial relations awareness.
    • Commercial awareness.
    • Experience in managing multi discipline projects.
    • Experience in leadership, management and administrative processes.
    • Broad knowledge of industry standards.
    • Proven background of resourcefulness under pressure.
    • Relationship building.
    • Strong customer/client focus.
    • Strong leadership skills/proven leadership skills and abilities.
    • Well developed written and oral communication/negotiation skills.
    • Project performance monitoring and reporting.
    • Experience in delivering projects in accordance with structured lifecycles and procedures.
    • Experience in project reviews and governance activities.
    • Being highly mobile, with ability to travel extensively.


    Preferred
    • Greater than ten years project/construction management experience in at least one significant EPC/EPCM project.
    • Greater than ten years’ experience in the Mining and Metals sectors.
    • Formal project management qualification.
    • Must be fluent in English and preferably French
    • Willing to work on rotation bases in Africa including West Africa
