Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. In 2016, the site poured its seven millionth ounce of gold, 20 years into its mine life. The initial Gilmore Expansion Project is expected to extend mine life to 2030.
Job Description
Responsible for the timely integration of geologic and blasthole data into grade control ore releases guiding open-pit shovel and loader operations. Responsible for field mapping dig faces, highwall exposures in open-pit mines, and blast hole patterns. Responsible for timely and accurate reconciliation of grade control ore releases with plan schedules.
Job Responsibilities
1. Monitor blast hole sampling protocol and blast hole assaying. Revise sampling procedures as needed to ensure that representative samples are collected. Develop a QA/QC program for blast hole assaying. Prepare geologic logs of blast hole cuttings.
2. Perform grade control responsibilities working with Engineering staff on short- and long-range mine planning.
3. Work with loading unit operators and supervisors at the dig face to guide mining and minimize mining dilution and ore loss.
4. Prepare geologic and alteration maps of dig faces and highwall exposures.
5. Map structural features and rock quality characteristics and analyze data to help determine highwall stability.
6. Consult with Metallurgical Department staff on geological/mineralogical characteristics of ore that may impact mill recoveries.
7. Work closely with Senior Geologists to refine and update reserve and resource models based on geological and geochemical data from mapping and grade control sampling.
8. Maintain accurate records and files and prepare grade control presentations.
9. Punctuality and regular attendance is required.
10. Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
11. Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to, safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
12. Work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them. Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
13. Perform other duties as required associated with the safe and efficient operation of open-pit mines.
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Mining Engineering is required. Two years as a Mine / Production Geologist in open-pit mining is preferred. Exposure to grade control practices for gold mining is preferred.
Skills
Must have a sound background in sampling theory for assay techniques. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the state. Must be capable of unsupervised light-duty driving in a dynamic open-pit mining environment. Must have a strong commitment to safe working practices. Sound working knowledge and skill with a PC utilizing word processing and Excel spreadsheet programs. Proficiency with MineSight, Leapfrog, Ore Pro 3D, and/or Vulcan softwares is preferred. Demonstrate strong administrative and organizational skills. Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and with others in a team environment. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management. Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets. May work holidays, shift work, and weekends as required.
