About the Position

Working at the Back River Project site near the Kitikmeot Region in Nunavut on a rotational basis (3x3), the Site Safety Supervisor is responsible for providing site-based support to aid in the development, implementation, and maintenance of Sabina’s health and safety policies, programs, and procedures. The Site Safety Supervisor monitors site personnel’s compliance to Sabina’s safety requirements and assists in conducting investigations, identifying appropriate corrective actions, recognizing causal factors, maintaining required documentation, and reporting of all HSE infractions. The Supervisor provides technical support and guidance to the HSE and project teams as required to promote an overall safe and productive working environment.

Primary responsibilities

Reporting to the Superintendent, Health and Safety, duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide Site-Based support to assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of health and safety policies, programs, and procedures;
  • Monitor compliance to Sabina’s safety requirements by all site personnel, and encourage Sabina’s safety policies and procedures site-wide;
  • Assist project teams in identifying and eliminating risks and hazards. Provide technical support and guidance to the HSE Team as required;
  • Conduct investigations into injuries, accidents, and unsafe acts and identify appropriate corrective actions are properly taken, causal factors are identified, and appropriate documentation takes place. Maintain records of incidents, HSE monitoring measurement activities, causes, and solutions;
  • Conduct health and safety audits, risk assessments reviews, and motivate others in initiating change to promote results in terms of safety and production;
  • Compile and analyze HSE data for presentations and trend analysis for internal and external stakeholders reporting needs;
  • Conduct training and mentor site personnel by providing instruction and direction to ensure a positive and qualitative performance;
  • Uphold business continuity and emergency management plans and procedures;
  • Ensure HSE documents, such as policies, procedures, and any other filing systems, are periodically reviewed and updated; and
  • Track and report on the status of ongoing investigates, and corrective/preventative measures.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have prior experience working in a remote camp setting with limited access to resources. Additionally, they will have:

  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience working in a Health and Safety role (preference given to those with Artic/Northern experience in mining/heavy industry) combined with prior supervisory experience;
  • Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or related) required;
  • Train the Trainer, Mine Rescue, Supervisor Level II, a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or related certifications considered an asset; and
  • Prior experience working in remote camp settings with limited access to resources considered an asset.

Compensation and benefits

The salary range for this position is $110 – 125K annually (based on qualifications and prior experience).Competitive benefits and bonus compensation will be discussed with the successful candidate.
