About The Role

Schedule: Full time, permanent
Location: Preference of location is flexible. This position will report into the Toronto Corporate office with at least 50% travel required.

Position Reports To: Director, Sustainability

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Director, Sustainability, the Manager, Water Strategy and Stewardship will establish the strategic water approach and direction and will support New Gold to maintain and grow its leadership position in sustainability. The role will work closely with all New Gold operations to develop the right governance, strategy, and implementation of a water management & stewardship plan. The Water Strategy & Stewardship Manager will use insights gained to formulate a competitive business strategy and to integrate water related practices within the current business model. In addition, the Water Strategy & Stewardship Manager will be responsible for supporting New Gold’s Climate Action and Tailings Management strategies as well as annual disclosure needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work cross functionally with corporate and site -teams to ensure company-wide alignment and implementation of water management & stewardship practices
  • Work with sites to develop a watershed-based approach to water management & stewardship
  • Ensure that all department are aware and understand the water management commitments, and obligations to ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory standards
  • Review significant risks at all levels and understand how to develop appropriate mitigations strategies
  • Anticipate and manage problems in a proactive manner and with the appropriate urgency’
  • Support the implementation of corporate standards and reporting that are reflective of industry best practices

  • Part of New Gold’s Sustainability team, and responsible for liaising with members of all site-based teams
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the water management & stewardship plan. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure the vision and plan reflect the material issues of all departments
  • Champion organizational continuous improvement activities for water related performance in exploration, development, operations, and expansion projects
  • Oversee the governance of water management, as well as tailings management
  • Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge and understanding of sustainability and ESG issues that impact New Gold in its operating jurisdictions
  • Build trusting internal relationships as a central point of contact and expert in sustainability decision-making across functions
  • Build strong trusting relationships with key external stakeholders such as aboriginal groups, community groups, NGOs, policymakers, industry associations, etc.
  • Engage with industry and regulatory groups to effectively influence policy development that has a significant impact on mining in areas relevant to the company

  • Relevant experience in the water management field, including management experience, preferably within the mining sector
  • P. Eng. designation required
  • Experience in negotiating and working with governments, regulators, communities, and Indigenous groups
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to travel to visit operating and development sites and host communities on a frequent basis, sometimes on short notice
  • Familiar with the Towards Sustainable Mining Protocols, including specific implementation or assessment experience with the Water Stewardship, Climate Change (previously GHG Protocol) and or Tailings Management Protocols
