Job Description

The MEM Machinist is reporting to MEM Machine Shop Supervisor within the MEM department and is accountable for the safe, efficient, accurate and cost effective set up and operation of a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts. He may also modify parts to make or repair machine components or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, engineering drawings, and machining procedures.

Job Responsibilities

Includes but not limited to:
• Review blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work-piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
• Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job
• Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping
• Select appropriate machines (e.g. lathes) and position or load material for a job
• Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut, according to established guidelines and procedures
• Monitor machine while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature and identify issues
• Verifies conformance of finished work-piece to specifications, using measuring and inspection
tools as necessary
• Comply with machine manuals, technical data and work instructions for all machining operations
• Performs routine maintenance tasks on machines as required.
• Provide the required reports as requested by your supervisor.
• Communicate with customers concerning repair and service needs.
• Participate in the technical and performance evaluation of your trainees, and provide constructive feedback to improve their competency
• Ensure all machining tasks performed are within the compliance of Kinross safe operating procedures, standard job guidelines and if not, a comprehensive job safety analysis is performed
• Provide a safe, efficient and effective work place.

Education and Experience

MEM Machinist 1

This is the entry level. The employee will perform many of the above listed duties and responsibilities, may have independence on some duties while close supervision on others. The employee works in a learning capacity performing a range of machining duties while receiving close supervision
Mandatory Requirements for this position:

• Vocational Training Certificate in General Mechanics, Metallic Fabrication (CAP level or equivalent)
• 1-2 years' experience working as Mechanic , Boilermaker or Welder
• Ability to use precision tools (e.g. calipers, micrometers) to take accurate measurements
• Ability to use hand and power tools
• Ability to read blueprints, schematics and manuals
• Ability to use applied Mathematics (formulas, ratios, imperial/metric conversions, geometry, trigonometry…)
• Read and write French or Arabic.

Desirable Skill, Knowledge, Training, and Experience:
• Previous technical experience in machining or fabrication
• Excellent manual dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail
• Driver license essential.

MEM Machinist 2

This is the intermediate level. The employee will perform many of the above listed duties and responsibilities may have independence on some duties while limited supervision on others. The employee works in a developing capacity with increased responsibility for performing a range of machining duties, typically will receive limited supervision.
Mandatory Requirements for this position in addition to Machinist 1:

• Vocational Training Certificate in General Mechanics, Metallic Fabrication (BT level or equivalent cumulated experience and education)
• 2-3 years' experience working as Machinist 1
• Good understanding of Metallurgy principles (characteristics and classification of ferrous and nonferrous metals, non-metals and heat treatment….)
• Ability to properly use and maintain drilling machines, power saws, grinders and hydraulic press

Desirable Skill, Knowledge, Training, and Experience:
• Familiar with the use of Engineering drawing software ( Auto-CAD or similar)
• Oxy-cutting and welding skills
• Forklift and Overhead Cranes operation
MEM Machinist 3
This is the experienced level. The employee performs a full range of machining operations and uses considerable independent judgment in making decisions without the availability of supervision.
Mandatory Requirements for this position in addition to Machinist 2:

• Vocational Training Diploma in General Mechanics, Metallic Fabrication (BTS level or equivalent cumulated experience and education)
• 3-4 years' experience working as Machinist 2
• Ability to plan sequence of machining operation (determine project requirement, perform roughing and finishing)
• Ability to properly use and maintain Milling and Laths machines
• Ability to properly use and maintain Line Boring and CNC machines
• Able to function effectively in a fast paced, team oriented work environment
• Good communication skill with individuals within and outside MEM department

Desirable Skill, Knowledge, Training, and Experience:
• Familiar with the use of Numerical Control software
• Previous machining experience on mining mobile equipment
• Problem solving and team building
