Reporting to the Manager, Water Integrated Planning, Water Strategy, the Senior Scientist, Water Quality (know at Teck as the Senior Engineer or Scientist, Implementation Plan Adjustment) (this is an update of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan) is accountable for overseeing the planning and support of our Water Quality objectives and environmental regulatory commitments across our five open-pit metallurgical coal mines.

To be successful, we require someone with outstanding strategy development, organization, communication, and leadership skills, who can effectively collaborate with partners at all levels across the organization and with external stakeholders, to identify and resolve issues. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, able to learn new things, and can prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Most importantly, you must have strong problem-solving skills and an adept ability to lead change in a multi-disciplinary field.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Lead, manage, and maintain water mitigation planning updates of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan (IPA)
  • Accountable for ensuring the regional plan aligns with the overarching environment stewardship strategy and business strategic direction
  • Obtain and integrate technical inputs such as Aquatic Sciences, Mitigation, Water Quality and Quantity, Fish and Fish Habitat to develop the IPA
  • Collaborate with Indigenous groups, regulatory agencies and communities and obtain feedback on objectives and plans; integrate feedback into plans and individual projects
  • Integrate planning occurring in Calcite, Adaptive Management, local scale and or for emerging constituents plans into the IPA, and provide guidance to other water quality management plans
  • Confirm regulatory commitments, conditions and regulations are met
  • Oversee preparation and prepare technical reports, presentations, and external communications to advance regional plans
  • Support the identification, development, and integration of RACE™ novel ideas using technology to lead initiatives for water quality management
  • Direct, coach, mentor, and lead a small team of professionals
  • Incorporate our adaptive management framework to reduce uncertainty, adapt, learn, and adjust


Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field
  • Professional designation in a related field (P. Geo, P. Bio) or eligible for designation required
  • Registered, or eligible to register, with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) ; Teck will support eligible employees with their EGBC registration
  • Minimum seven years’ experience in water management and or mine planning
  • Experience in environmental water quality, mine water planning, regulatory and or permitting processes
  • Experience working with Indigenous groups and regulatory agencies
  • Strategic planning and decision-making facilitation experience would be an asset
