The Role

We are seeking Superintendent Metallurgy to work at the Lihir Gold Limited operation in Papua New Guinea and to reside residentially on the project. You will hold exceptional operational and technical experience across both the Back end and Front end of a conventional gold carbon in leaching process and HPAL (ideal). The successful applicant plan, lead and manage the Metallurgy department, ensuring all safety and production targets are met and continuous improvement is achieved through research and development and investigating and implementing improvement opportunities. You will be an expert in Gold Milling and Flotation and highly desirable operational and technical exposure to Autoclave gold processing will be looked upon favourably. Senior Metallurgist's across Gold with Superintendent level experience in the above areas are encouraged to apply also.

Additional scope of your role will cover

Safety
  • Drives and influences proactive safety behaviours within workgroups through visible leadership.
  • Ensures all personnel, visitors and contractors comply with site and contractual HSE requirements and hold people accountable for adherence.
  • Plans work so that it can be conducted safely, considers environmental conditions, nearby activities, people and other resources needed to complete the work.

People
  • Develops team members through regular feedback, coaching and formal training.
  • Make appropriate decisions in line with best work practices and Newcrest values.
  • Manages a diverse work team with effective management skills/techniques.
  • Takes an active role in promoting the training and development of national and Lihirian staff.
  • Creates opportunities for people to work together to enable them to contribute to the business and learn from each other.

Production
  • Monitors metallurgical systems and business processes, identifies and prioritises improvement opportunities.
  • Develops continuous improvement targets for the function, drives and measures achievement of these targets.
  • Organises the work of the team to ensure all functions and services are provided efficiently.
  • Improves financial return of concentrate production through improvements in controls for marketing (concentrate quality and recoveries) and cost control strategies.
  • Ensures accurate reporting of production activities.
  • Oversees the metallurgical research and development program ensuring new and innovative ideas are capitalised for maximum benefit.

Cost
  • Delivers work within approved budget managing any variances in accordance with escalation process.
  • Actively seeks cost reduction opportunities.
  • Identify and drive improvements to cost control, performance reporting & analysis through cost review meetings, benchmarking and implementation of latest technologies to streamline where possible.

Qualifications, technical competencies and required knowledge and experience includes
  • Tertiary Bachelor Degree in Mineral Processing Essential with accreditation from the Institute of Engineers PNG Inc. to be completed as part of work permit process.
  • Certificate in Workplace Assessment and Training or similar desirable.
  • 10+ years relevant work experience essential in mineral processing, including at least 5 years in a senior supervisory capacity in large-scale hydrometallurgical processing complex.
  • Experience with autoclaves and / or high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant desirable.
  • Experience with Carbon in leach technologies.
  • Understanding of Allen Bradley Process control systems (desirable).
  • Takes personal responsibility to develop team members through constructive feedback, allocation of assignments / projects, coaching and formal training to build capability & competence.
  • Works in accordance with PNG Mine Safety Act, Newcrest Safety System, Safety Policies and Procedures and Newcrest Environment policies and all departmental operating procedures.
  • Previous experience working in a remote location in a developing country advantageous, but not essential.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor a large group of reports, while demonstrating effective personal behaviours.
  • Develops & implements mid to long-term departmental plans, changes and initiatives to achieve overall business goals by providing positive leadership, direction & guidance within the department and wider organisation.
  • Reviews departmental financial data & results to assess performance and identify opportunities for maximising results, reducing risk and implementing cost management initiatives.
  • Continually seeks to understand key market drivers and emerging trends (e.g., economical, technology, competition, pricing, stakeholder needs, cultural, political and legal factors associated with the industry, sector, country & region).

Mobilisation Requirements
  • This is a residential based role at Lihir Gold Limited in PNG.
  • Ability to provide/obtain valid police clearance
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment
