POSITION SUMMARY
As a member of the Company Mine Technical Services, this position performs daily engineering functions and special
projects in a producing underground hard rock mining operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Other Duties May be Assigned
At a Mine Engineer II/III level, technical functions are executed at an advanced level of capability with minimal supervisor
input required. Technical functions for the role may include:
•Mine planning:
o Performs short-range mine planning including development design, drift & fill, and long-hole stope design,
and backfill design;
o Schedules development, production, and backfill;
o Performs surveying duties in the absence of the mine surveyor;
o Reports mining progress and KPIs; reconciles the schedule and plan with actual;
o Performs life-of-mine planning and reserves determination;
o Coordinates with geology, survey, and mine operations groups.
•Mine utilities, projects, and ventilation:
Plans and troubleshoots mine services including power, ventilation, compressed air, and water;
o Optimizes techniques for explosives utilization and storage; provides project management and project
controls for underground construction activities.
o Creates AFE (authorization for expenditure) documents for capital projects and purchases.
•Geotechnical Specialist Role:
o Designs, implements and provides QA/QC for all ground control practices including various rock bolting
methods, shotcrete, and backfill.
o Identifies and mitigates potential geotechnical hazards related to current activities and future mining plans
through inspections, monitoring, and modeling.
•Mine Automation & Technology Specialist Role:
o Designs, implements and troubleshoots the hardware and software related to mine technology systems
o Systems within the scope of the role include autonomous and teleremote-operated equipment,
underground WiFi networks, personnel tracking sensors, proximity detection, centralized blasting,
distributed control systems, and other mine technologies which may not yet exist.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience Requirements
•B.S. in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or equivalent degree or equivalent combination of education
and experience. Other degrees such as electromechanical engineering, electrical/electronics engineering, or
mechanical engineering for Mine Automation Engineer specialist role.
•5-7 years of engineering experience required
Technical Competencies
Significant experience and advanced capabilities with any of the following skillsets:
•Underground mine planning software (Deswik & EPS), AutoCAD, VentSim, ShotPlus
•Underground surveying techniques
•Ground support techniques and geotechnical modeling
•Mine ventilation, dewatering, compressed air and electrical systems
•Project management techniques
•Autonomous mining equipment, centralized blasting systems and underground WiFi networks
•Mine costing and financial analysis techniques to explain variances, evaluate projects and prioritize allocation of
resources
LOCATION - Alaska
This position is located in a beautiful community in Alaska. The company is very involved in community activities, economic development, and local growth. This small city has it all, the adventure of the 'last frontier' as well as a good education system, year-round cultural and sports activities for the family, and a wide variety of entertainment, world-class fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing. The weather is temperate and there is a rich mining history. The mine provides a comprehensive man camp, that is at no cost to the employees. They also provide travel reimbursement for any employees who travel to the site and potential relocation for employees who move to the area.
