The Opportunity:

We currently have a remote opportunity for a Social Performance Superintendent to join the Newcrest Team.

The successful candidate will lead the implementation of the Brucejack social performance management system that include components of engagement plans, community incident and grievance management, social risk assessment & management, social impact, community investment, and cultural competency and ensure alignment with Newcrest's social performance standards.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Understanding the Company's obligations and objectives in relation to Social Performance and Community Relations such as those described in the Cooperation Agreements, regulatory authorizations, site management plans, and corporate strategy
  • Support development, coaching and mentorship of more junior members of the Brucejack and regional SP teams
  • Support Brucejack in progressing engagement to meet the principles of Free, Prior and Informed Consent & the principles in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • Oversee community engagement and outreach activities (coordinating tours, site visits, community visits, job fairs, etc.) in northwest BC (Dease Lake to Terrace/Smithers) as it relates to the Brucejack Mine
  • Act as a champion for cultural awareness and contribute to the development and implementation of cultural training across the operation
  • Support coordination, tracking, and management of internal and external social, community, and sustainability reporting obligations such as the yearly Economic and Social Effects Mitigation Plan (ESEMP), commitments, and objectives
  • Support Brucejack in the delivery of indigenous business procurement and workforce development strategies
  • Proactive engagement, risk management, and opportunity enhancement related to community concerns, interests and aspirations
  • Integrate the social performance management system with other site management systems
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with other functional areas of the Brucejack site including Human Resources/People, Supply Chain & Procurement, and site Operations
  • Act as a primary Company representative in ongoing communication between Newcrest and Tahltan, Nisga'a, Gitanyow, and Tsetsaut Skii km Lax Ha leadership
  • Support the development and promotion of Newcrest as Miner of Choice across stakeholder groups and the surrounding Nations and communities
  • Develop and manage annual Brucejack social performance budgets
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned

About You:
  • Post-secondary qualifications in indigenous relations, social sciences, sustainability, or related field, Masters degree preferred
  • A minimum 8 years related experience in indigenous/community relations and social performance
  • Experience in a cross-cultural working environment.
  • Proven track record in indigenous and community engagement
  • Experience in mining
  • Focus on Health, Safety, and the Environment
  • Demonstrated capability to build trust and personal credibility
  • Demonstrated project management, administrative, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships, and to adapt quickly to solve problems in a collaborative manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a team-player, able to build rapport with various community groups and organizations
  • Ability to identify and manage risk
  • Demonstrated expertise and success in implementing social/community strategies and programs
  • Effective use of stakeholder management software
  • Cross-cultural awareness with an understanding and sensitivity of the challenges associated with differences in cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Understanding of Indigenous culture, history, reconciliation, protocol, and issues faced by Indigenous groups
  • Prior experience working directly with Indigenous people and cultures.
  • Experience managing a team of technical and non-technical individuals
