What you will be responsible for?

  • The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for the execution of actions across all areas of the Esperance project to ensure compliance with all legal requirements and other commitments (including company standards and international best management practices).
  • The span of control of the Environmental Department at Esperance includes legal and environmental compliance, permitting, multi-vector monitoring programs, support for future engineering design, implementation of site-wide erosion and sediment control, and closure and concurrent revegetation and hydro-seeding.
  • The Environmental Specialist contributes competently in these areas as well as training and mentoring exploration staff to build environmental consciousness required to avoid not predicted impacts in all activities performed in Esperance, including earthworks, rock sampling, geophysics, drilling, transportation and camo operations.
  • The Environmental Specialist will also act in the role of the Environmental Superintendent during their absence for rotational breaks and other leave and is required to assume all tasks and responsibilities of the role including supervision of their direct reports, accountability for their budgets and operations and project delivery.


Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

  • We implement comprehensive environmental inspections, coordinating activities, data analysis, interpretation and reporting and other technical skills aligned with Newmont standards.
  • We support the elaboration and conduct the implementation of Environmental Management Plans, Risk Assessments, and Continuous Improvement Plans. Conduct internal inspections to verify both site and business partners operate in compliance with all legal requirements, Newmont Standards and other commitments.
  • We craft, budget for and guide environmental projects, including contractors, and consultants and all associated cost and safety controls.
  • We craft and deliver education and awareness programs so that employees are aware of their responsibilities, the environmental impacts and risks associated with the activities and apply procedures to control these risks.
  • We evaluate the severity of environmental impact events, their effect on the environment, and resolve accurate response or escalation.
  • We assist development of annual Environmental Department budget, strategy, objectives and targets to improve environmental performance and continually reduce business risk.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist

Education:

  • University degree in environmental science / engineering or related field (i.e. (chemistry, Geotech, geology, metallurgy or other).
  • Knowledge of mining industry and exploration / operation activities and associated environmental risks and management systems.
  • Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations as well as international best-practice relevant to mining operations and environmental management.


Experience:

  • Minimum (5) years of specifically-relevant experience.
  • Validated ability to work in the field carrying out tasks through to completion without supervision, using technical knowledge, as well as detailed knowledge of environmental procedures, techniques and regulations.
  • Confirmed skills to negotiate and influence others to achieve desired outcomes to improve environmental performance and reduce risk.
  • Prior experience in a similar technical role is strongly preferred.
  • Experience implementing ISO:14001 or similar risks management system.
  • Experience in the mining industry is required.


Skills and Abilities:

  • Achieved personal dedication to health and safety.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and French.
  • Must have valid light vehicle drivers' license and an international drivers' license for same, or ability to acquire this.
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Professional proficiency in ArcGIS, , AutoCAD, QGIS, GoldSim and/or a relevant environmental database or operating system is an advantage.
  • Having a solid understanding of applicable French regulations and other legal requirements and international best management practices for environmental risks across the mining spectrum is an advantage.


Working conditions and location

  • The position is located at the Esperance site. The incumbent must be willing and able to live in a remote mining accommodation camp for extended periods as per the work schedule.
  • Position may be required to travel to, and assist other domestic and international sites.
  • Position is available for National personnel on a rotational schedule (5/3 for now).
  • Must align with health and safety regulations, company policies, procedures, and the company's environmental policy.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Walk on rough, uneven, inclined, wet terrain, and climb stairs.
  • Wear personal protective equipment including hardhat, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus, earplugs, gloves, or any other equipment to perform duties safely.
