Purpose
To ensure the safe and efficient maintenance and management of assets for the mill, primary and secondary crushing plants, site services and tailing/effluent treatment facilities to meet or exceed safety, production, costs and availability targets, while ensuring safety and environmental compliance.
Essential Duties
Safety Compliance
- Responsible for development, monitoring and improvement of safety performance for all employees working in the mill, crushing plants, and tailing/ETP facilities.
- Responds to emergency situations and unusual operating or maintenance conditions to ensure the safety of personnel and limit potential negative impacts on production and costs.
- Responsible for ensuring the mill, crushing plants, and tailing facilities remain in compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Responsible for maintaining a high standard of housekeeping in all areas within the mill, crushing plants and tailing facilities..
- Promotes and monitors the utilization of Enablon and Fatality Risk Management, Safety Innovation and Unsafe Condition programs, incident reporting and accident investigations. Ensures timely follow-up and implementation of corrective measures.
- Participates in the development of Health and Safety action plans and conducts random Safety Tours. Ensures adequate and timely follow-up to identified issues and action items.
- Attends and participates in monthly Joint Health and Safety committee meetings, Contracting out committee meetings, Silica control committee meetings.
- Attends each mill maintenance safety meeting and participates in the morning safety huddles.
- Ensure that supervisors, maintenance personnel, and contractors working in the mill, tailing/ETP areas, and crushing plants are properly trained and inducted.
Personnel Management
- Supervises maintenance and site services front-line supervisors and coordinators. Sets objectives, reviews performance and administers salary for these employees. Participates in the Progressive Discipline Process and grievance procedures as required. Ensures compliance with the CBA.
- Provides leadership and direction for mill/crusher maintenance and site service crews.
- Holds meetings to ensure that employees are kept informed of safety, production, maintenance issues, and cost performance statistics, to encourage growth and participation in potential improvements to each KPI.
- Provide monthly departmental accruals to the site finance team
- Participates in the hiring process for both staff and bargaining unit employees within the department to ensure that new hires have the skills, qualifications and competencies required of them to become a contributing members of the mill team.
- Provides a strategic role in ensuring that mill Frontline supervisors are adequately trained to meet the requirements of the job.
- Provides coordination and planning links between the training department to ensure maintenance personnel is trained according to the government regulations, requirements of the CBA, and as special needs arise.
Succession Planning
- Complete performance reviews for all direct reports and ensure performance reviews are completed in a timely and professional manner for indirect reports.
- Identify strengths and opportunities for training and development.
- Guide and coach individuals towards reaching personal and company goals.
Training & Experience
- Degree, Technical Diploma, Valid Trades Certificate or equivalent work experience and/or training.
- Minimum 10 years experience in asset management and maintenance practices.
- Minimum 5 years in a supervisory role.
- A solid background in the maintenance, operation and optimization of crushing and grinding plants, process control, tailing management, and effluent treatment.
- Must be self-motivated and have the ability to motivate others and initiate change that yields positive results in terms of safety, the environment, production, and cost management in the mill area.
- A solid knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants is essential.
