POSITION OVERVIEW

Highly skilled Instrumentation & Controls Technician that will perform on the job training to advance the skills and ability of the Control Systems and Instrumentation repair workforce while demonstrating performance of the tasks associated with the removal, troubleshooting, calibration, repair, and installation of Process Control Systems (SCADA and DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), field instrumentation, variable frequency drives, communication network systems, HMI computer workstations and pumping/storage distribution systems. This position is a hands-on assignment that will work side-by-side with the workforce demonstrating the work performed for the purpose of instructing and training employees to ensure knowledge transfer and the use of best practices in the Control Systems and Instrumentation field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide individual mentoring and training for the Control Systems and Instrumentation work force.
  • Review and update standard operating procedures and job task instructions.
  • Recommend and assist in the development of action plans to continuously improve the control systems and instrumentation repair process and reliability.
  • Continually reinforce best safety practices and company policy and ensure that the electrical work force knows the hazards associated with working around electrical systems.
  • Advance the skills and ability of the Control Systems and Instrumentation workforce by instructing and demonstrating the ability to remove, repair, replace, test, analyze, diagnose, advance troubleshoot and optimize:
    • preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, repair and replacement of Process Control Systems (SCADA and DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), control and instrument loops, field instrumentation, chemical analysis systems, variable frequency drives, communication network systems, pumping/storage distribution systems, and HMI computer workstations in accordance with industry standards.
    • DCS and SCADA systems, process instrumentation, PLC's, PLC based control and instrument loops, communication network systems, HMI computer workstations, hazardous chemical distribution/detection systems and chemical analyzer equipment.
    • Programming necessary for maintaining the DCS and SCADA systems, including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and other software.
    • Databases with information regarding assigned work orders, equipment calibration, repair and parts inventory and orders parts.
    • Installation and repairs complex electrical controls systems including PLC I/O interfaces, hard wired MCC wiring/components, assisting electricians with troubleshooting efforts.
    • Repair/install medium voltage systems including VFDs, full voltage starters, incoming power systems such as fusing and transformers in a fully compliant with all applicable NFPA 70 safety standards.
    • Review prints for conformity to ASARCO standards and accepted industry standards in instrumentation principals, practices, procedures and terminology.
    • Evaluate and specifies instrumentation for installation in the process.
    • Support other departments within the L-SX-EW Plant as well as outside contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies in the verification and third-party certification of instrument data.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Proficient with data communications systems, protocols and cabling, including wired and wireless network systems, radio telemetry and Rockwell ControlLogix controllers.
  • Proficient skills in programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) computer workstations.
  • Work order and maintenance management systems experience.
  • Experience maintaining Dell servers, including performing backups, periodic hardware preventive maintenance and software troubleshooting on error logging.
  • High level of knowledge of instrumentation systems, motor controls, process evaluation and subsequent PID loop tuning.
  • Experience with Rockwell DCS software Factory Talk, Vantage Point, Historian, Asset Center, redundancy procedures and WIN911 installation and maintenance.
  • Experience with Cisco layer 3 switches integrated within the DCS configured as stack.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to teach and mentor.
  • Ability to read, understand and apply information from technical manuals, drawings, prints, and schematics for installation, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Ability to lead and complete job assignments in a timely manner.
  • Mentor and/or train other Control System and Instrumentation Repair employees.
  • Ability to be trained and to operate equipment including but not limited to scissor lift, man-lifts, forklift, boom trucks, and overhead cranes.
  • Applicant must have effective written, visual, electronic, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety related instructions and procedures given in English.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and set priorities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to think under stressful and adverse conditions.
  • Must have teamwork, problem solving and negotiation skills.
  • The physical requirements of the position are considered Heavy Work: Exerting up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The ability to work in conditions of extreme heat, extreme cold, and vibration. May involve work with or near chemicals including but not limited to airborne and/or skin exposure, high noise levels, confined spaces, and heights.
  • Ability to wear respirator in conditions of fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
  • Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, stairs, ramps, and the like with agility.
  • Availability to work any shift, including weekends and holidays (shifts may be rotating). Mine operations are 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year).
  • Provide and maintain the minimum personal tools as described by the department tool list or be able to obtain them within 90 days of hire.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years related experience as a Control System/Instrumentation Technician and certification as a Journeymen Control Systems/Instrumentation Technician through a state approved apprenticeship program (or)
  • 7 years related experience as a Control Systems/Instrumentation Technician and associates degree or Trade School Certification in a related field
  • Must have high school diploma or GED.
  • English language fluency.
