Reporting to the Manager, Integrated Lands Planning, the Senior Lead, Lands Research is responsible for leading the design, direction and delivery of terrestrial environment research and development (R&D) programs and projects. This work will support an understanding of potential local and regional impacts in addition to the application of effective mitigation for implementation (including rehabilitation and offsetting) to advance operations, reclamation, and closure.

To be successful, we require someone with a diverse skill set in the environment field, and experience in developing research frameworks, programs and projects. Excellent written and oral communication abilities are vital, especially the ability to communicate to a wide variety of stakeholder groups. This person will collaborate technically with research partners regarding experimental design development and data analysis, and provide direction for research programs.

Responsibilities:
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Lead significant projects through their entire life cycle from idea, lab and/or pilot testing, to transfer to operations and/or reclamation personnel
  • Collaborate with Teck’s Environment and Social Responsibility function to acquire necessary permits and work with regulators to transition R&D projects to technologies that can be relied on as primary mitigation
  • Balance the technical needs of research programs with the practical requirements of active mining or industrial environments
  • Collaborate with academic institutions, consultants indigenous and non-governmental organizations to deliver credible R&D that supports Teck’s vision
  • Act as project manager to set project scopes, develop RFPs, and evaluate proposals
  • Become an internal expert in relevant R&D disciplines including terrestrial science, reclamation, and conservation
  • Deliver R&D updates to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Drive the development of reclamation monitoring and research programs, utilizing external qualified terrestrial, ecological and reclamation experts
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with government agencies, Indigenous groups, and local communities of interest
  • Ensure relevant permit and other regional regulatory commitments related to research and monitoring are met


Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in science, in an environmental, geological, mining, or related field
  • Minimum seven years of meaningful experience in soils, ecology, or reclamation, including experience in an industrial environment
  • Demonstrated experience or knowledge of R&D
  • Experience planning on a three-to-five-year time horizon
  • Experience in mining, or oil and gas is an asset
