Reporting to the Payroll Administrator, the Payroll Clerk is responsible for maintaining the payroll records for Teck Alaska Incorporated. The position is responsible for preparing, distributing, and recording hourly and salaried payrolls, and ensuring the timely and accurate submission of required information in a confidential manner, as well as compliance with contractual and legal obligations.

The Payroll Clerk will lead by example in ensuring that safe and healthy working conditions are maintained and that facilities are in good working order, and that workers follow safe work practices to protect their health and safety.

This position will be located in the Anchorage Teck office; work schedule will be Monday - Friday 8am-5pm

Responsibilities:
  • Establish and promote a Safe and Healthy working environment; conform to Teck Corporate and Red Dog Operations Safety & Health and environmental Management programs
  • Responsible for the preparation and processing of biweekly and other payrolls
  • Review and ensure accuracy of time entry; track and deduct all garnishments and other special payroll deductions. Ensure the accurate and timely transmission of payroll data files, which include Automated Clearing House (ACH) network, Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), and Benefit Outsourcers (Merrill Lynch)
  • Ensure the accurate and timely preparation and payments of pay period, monthly, quarterly, and annual government reporting, and requirements
  • Verification of payroll related updates done by the Human Resource Department
  • Manage PTO and R&R banks ensuring that that payroll-related policies are maintained including PTO earned time, payouts, and advances
  • Initiate, recommend, and implement improvements in the preparation of payroll data
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • A minimum of two (2) years of payroll clerk or similar accounting experience
  • Knowledge of US payroll tax requirements and applicable legislation would be an asset
  • Able to maintain a high standard of confidentiality and ethics on all payroll related matters
  • Strong skills using and understanding the flow of transactions in an integrated and automated payroll accounting system
  • Must be proficient in MS Office Suite and Windows environment and able to thrive in a fast-paced setting
  • Excellent communication and experience of working co-operatively as a team member
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and documentation, including the ability to articulate ideas and communicate needs in a concise manner
  • Must have proficient writing skills; be highly organized and able to work with minimal guidance
  • Must be task oriented, self-motivated and have the inherent ability to multi-task, work under pressure, meet deadlines and work as a team-player
  • Strong organizational skills are an asset


Successful candidates must be fully vaccinated againstinfection by COVID-19, subject to an exemption approved by Teck Alaska.
