Reporting to the Manager, Aquatic Sciences, the Senior Lead, Aquatic Sciences is responsible for technical direction and delivery on aquatic effects monitoring goals and objectives, aquatic supporting studies and emerging issues, and supporting risk management strategies. You will lead a team of technical professionals in the Sustainable Development group to understand aquatic ecosystem health downstream of our operations to meet monitoring related requirements and advance our understanding of emerging issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Provide technical direction for aquatic monitoring programs and supporting studies, including the collection of chemical, physical and biological data from various media (e.g., water, sediment, benthic invertebrates, fish) and laboratory toxicity testing
  • Provide technical and strategic review and direction for study designs, reports, and engagement materials associated with aquatic programs designed to assess aquatic health conditions downstream of our mining operations
  • Supervise and mentor environmental staff as well as coordinate and manage consulting teams that support regional monitoring programs and projects
  • Provide aquatic science technical support and program review on Regulatory Approvals permit applications and operational activities
  • Support continued development and implementation of Teck’s Water Quality Adaptive Management Plan to address regulatory requirements and environmental management objectives
  • Coordinate input from multiple consultants to fulfill program objectives in a timely manner
  • Manage annual budgeting and scheduling to meet regulatory and business commitments
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with internal and external partners through the Environmental Monitoring Committee and Elk Valley Fish and Fish Habitat Committee, government agencies, and Indigenous groups to support the implementation of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Toxicology, Chemistry, Biology, or a relevant combination of education and experience
  • Hold a professional designation (e.g. RP. Bio) and meet the BC provincial requirements of a qualified professional for applicable monitoring and assessment programs
  • Minimum seven years demonstrated ability providing technical leadership on aquatic health monitoring programs related to resource management
  • Experience supervising or leading a team
  • Excellent project management experience
  • Experience with environmental data management software (GIS/EQuIS) and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite®
  • Knowledge and experience with federal and provincial compliance practices and regulations related to water quality and quantity, water management, and resource development
  • Technical experience in understanding of aquatic sciences and risk evaluation experience related to water quality, quantity, and receptors
