The Mine Planning Engineer / Geologist position may be based in Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton, and reports to the Regional Manager, Exploration & Resource Development. 
 
The Mine Planning Engineer / Geologist is responsible for evaluating mine sites throughout Lehigh Hanson's Canada Region to determine the most economic and efficient way to mine aggregates. The Mine Planning Engineer / Geologist will design a variety of structures (pitshells, haul roads, stockpiles, etc.) as needed based upon all of the parameters that impact the facility as well as support regional management with mine plans. Position may be based in Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton.

This position is ideal for someone who is self-motivated and enjoys problem solving in a group environment. Exposure to multiple levels of management and a variety of complex geologic structures, operational challenges, and varying extraction methods for Lehigh Hanson's sand and gravel mining operations is what this position offers.

What you'll get to do:
  • Responsible for supporting aggregate operations in Canada Region with tasks including but not limited to: resource and reserve calculations, pitshells and haulage plans, overburden and waste stripping plans, reclamation plans, construction grading plans, pump system evaluations and benchmarking.
  • Work collaboratively with other geologists and engineers, land and environment managers, and local management throughout the Region to evaluate both the quantity and quality of the materials to be mined.
  • Prepare detailed mine plans and establish action plans together with other engineers and local management for key milestones throughout the reserve life that will have major impacts on the operation.
  • Conduct drill programs to explore new reserve opportunities. 
  • Develop and provide data required to produce short, mid, and long-range mine plans.
  • Work with project coordinators and engineers to provide necessary design parameters and volumes for capital projects.
  • Prepare all mine planning documents necessary to obtain new mining permits for greenfield sites and/or update mining permits for existing sites.
  • Develop reclamation plans that will enhance the value of mined out properties for the highest and best end land use.
  • Evaluate the efficiencies of systems and develop mining plans which will assist operations when unforeseen conditions develop.
  • Provide direction in the due diligence, acquisition, permitting and land management processes.
Essential Experience and Skills: 
  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Mining Engineering or Civil Engineering with a mining focus or Geology.
  • Current registration or ability to register with an appropriate engineering or geoscience association.
  • Minimum of five years directly related experience in preparing mine plans and supporting documents in accordance with applicable mining regulations and best practices, strongly preferred.
  • Proficient use of Carlson/AutoCAD (preferably) and/or other computer design programs and mining or earthwork software. GIS experience considered an asset.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to travel between 25-50%.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Experience in exploration, reserve evaluation, aggregate processing, material testing and Quality Control techniques considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License
