As our Environmental Engineering Intern, you will provide a supporting role in numerous activities within the Environmental Department for Greens Creek Mine. Every day you will work at a mine on a remote island about 18 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. You’ll start every job with safety first by inspecting your workplace and your equipment. To thrive in this role, you must work safely while working with environmental monitoring, data organization, and laboratory testing. We’re on a remote island, you must know how to work independently.
About Us

The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing approximately 450 people. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Winner of numerous safety and environmental awards, Greens Creek is seeking new team members committed to professional growth and success.

Here’s what you can expect in this role:
  • Training first. Every hire is provided MSHA training in the first 4 days on the job. We also provide department-level training on not just what to do, but safety, as well.
  • You should be enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program in ecology, geology, hydrology, environmental engineering, or related field.
  • Ideally, you will have completed at least your sophomore year, and you can be available from mid-May through mid-August.
  • You will be working on a remote island and living in a mining camp environment away from home if you are not Juneau based. Interns will work Monday through Saturdays, with Sundays off.
  • You'll pass a background screening for ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms), as well as a hair follicle drug screen.
  • Safety is important. Every piece of equipment and each work area must be inspected before we start the day for your safety and the safety of your team.
  • You will be paid, and have access to medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as a 401 (k) with company match.
