SNC-Lavalin's Mining and Metallurgy (M&M) Division is currently seeking a Director of Mine Tailings, Waste, and Closure for Western Canadian to join our team. Applying your previous leadership and market experience, you will be leading a team of professionals in sustaining and growing its business and providing high quality services in mine tailings related services.

As the Mine Tailings, Waste, and Closure Director, you will report to the VP Tailings, Water, and Environment, Western Canada and will lead the team's strategic planning, growth, team development, and provide technical leadership across Western Canada. You will have a strong technical background in geotechnical and civil engineering with knowledge of design, construction and closure practices for mining facilities, particularly tailings and waste storage facilities in various climatic and seismic regions. As a leader in the SNC-Lavalin organization, you will have good business awareness and acumen in addition to possessing a competent understanding of project/client management. Preference for the work location is Vancouver Lower Mainland, however alternate locations may be considered.

How will you contribute to the team?

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

Strategic Planning and Implementation -
  • Sustain and grow tailings related business across the mining sector for new, existing, and legacy mine projects.
  • Identify/anticipate/evaluate and report on market trends, business conditions, opportunities, and industry dynamics.
  • Support development and execution of Mining annual strategic and operational plans.
  • Support quarterly strategic updates to senior management.
  • Innovate and enhance our team capabilities and integrated approach.
  • Identify and develop strategic partnerships amongst the consulting community.
  • Lead and foster mine tailings regional marketing and business development activities.


Leadership -
  • Sustain existing client relationships; develop and build new client relationships.
  • Build, grow and develop a team of high performers in our Tailings, Water, and Environment Practice.
  • Identify resource gaps in the team and attract/retain key staff to the team.
  • Work collaboratively with M&M and Technical Professional Organization staff, account managers, regional leaders, and technical service leadership to deliver safe, profitable, and sustainable projects and services for our clients.


Operational Management -

  • Work with Operational leaders to direct resource allocation for optimal project delivery and client management.
  • Demonstrate leadership in safety and ethical business practices.
  • Developing annual budget forecasts, and optimizing staff levels to meet budget and project needs.
  • Provide routine operational updates through Operational leaders on team and project performance.


Technical Oversight -

  • Guide technical team in successful project delivery applying industry prominent best practices related to mine tailings and closure e.g., Canadian Dam Association (CDA), Global Tailings Standard (GTS).
  • Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) for tailings facilities.
  • Engage with key technical practice disciplines such as geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, environment, permitting, rock mechanics, water management and treatment.
  • Directly lead/manage mine tailings and closure projects (where appropriate) and may oversee/support other PMs.
  • Ensure application of quality system principles to project delivery.


What will you contribute?
  • Bachelor's Degree, or preferably Master's Degree, in civil/geotechnical engineering with focus on mine tailings, waste, and closure.
  • Have status or be eligible for status through a provincial professional engineering organization.
  • Minimum 15 years' relevant industry experience and demonstrated success in directing a team in managing mine tailings and waste related projects.
  • Strong understanding of the mine tailings, waste, and closure services and drivers (e.g., regulatory requirements, market/political trends, client specific issues).
  • Proven experience applying CDA and GTS standards to tailings projects.
  • Highly experienced in mine tailings and waste from design through to closure.
  • Ability to create innovative and effective client solutions that are aligned with their business objectives.
  • Proven experience in building rapport and trust with key clients, business leaders, and team members.
  • Proven experience in growing and successfully managing technical team.
  • Experience developing and executing strategic plans.
  • Success in responding to Requests for Proposal, Expressions of Interest, Statements of Qualification.
  • Proven business development skills, including significant experience building and maintaining productive relationships with a client base.
  • Highly developed client management skills with strong understanding of the business development challenges of a consulting services provider.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills and polished presentation and public speaking skills
  • Excellent organization, coordination, and supervision skills.
