Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.

Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Underground Mining & Metals Processing Manager to join our Technology Business Solutions - Integrated Operations Team within our Base Metals Operations based in Sudbury, ON. This is a permanent position, which will work remotely with frequent travel to the Vale Sudbury Offices.

In this role, you will lead and manage activities of business and digital transformation through multidisciplinary changes in processes, governance, and the adoption of new technologies by interfacing across the operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for the entire life cycle of product management from implementation to decommissioning. This role will be responsible for a team of direct reports, including employees and contractors. Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Develop and maintain the end-to-end product lifecycle (strategy, design, development, implementation, improvements, support and decommissioning) for products accountable
  • \t
  • Responsible for project delivery, including the planning and execution of the multiannual budget, monitoring of the business case, governance of implementation of the various initiatives, performance indicators and becoming the guardian of the future vision / Roadmap of Technology.

  • Responsible for the management of the technology solutions (end to end, projects & operations)

  • The Manager will be a member of the Technology Management Team and is expected to contribute directly to the overall direction and management of the IT Department and to the definition and achievement of the goals set for the Department, in the company's on-going strategic plan for Technology.

  • Promote the experimentation of new components of technology architecture, through proofs of concept and pilot projects.
  • \t
  • Proactively and collaboratively contribute to the vision and Technology Solutions Plan for the business areas, considering current scenario and anticipating future needs in alignment with the technology roadmap.

  • Work in collaboration with executive/senior level clients and Technology leadership team to deliver solutions to meet the objectives of the business.
  • \t
  • Support the process of alignment and engagement with the main stakeholders of the projects, influencing the leadership in the adoption of the improvements of proposed processes and technologies, directing a change management strategy to minimize the impacts on the implementation of projects and maximize the return to the business.

  • Work together with the Technology business partner to identify the priority of the portfolio of projects and Technology delivery plan. Verify opportunities for optimization of solutions in search of standardization, uniformity and cost optimization (e.g., multi-country, regional or global).

  • Continuously manage teams, develop and empower people through continuous feedback and promote high-performance culture.
  • \t
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and standards, especially those focused on cybersecurity and safety and is responsible for meeting technology audit requests related to the functional scope of the area.

  • Prospect and develop specialized suppliers and establish together with the procurement area a strategic plan of technology partners to develop and support technology solutions delivery.
  • \t
  • Monitor the performance indicators of the area, acting proactively to avoid deviations and presents action plans for the deviations that are identified.
  • \t
  • Develop and monitor annual capital and operational budgets through planning, project execution, resource management and ongoing support as required in line with the overall business budget cycles.
  • \t
  • Manage support contracts, maintenance, and new developments in accordance with compliance standards, ensuring the delivery of services and execution of the budget.
  • \t
  • Respond to Audit exams in processes and contracts related to your area.
  • \t
  • Working in partnership with other cross-functional Technology areas to deliver higher quality solutions aligned with roles and responsibilities defined in Technology governance.
  • \t
  • Work with Technology business partners to increase business awareness of implemented capabilities, and seek opportunities for benefit maximization (usability, exploitation).
  • \t
  • Recognize Local, Regional and Global responsibilities and establish needed interactions.
  • \t
  • Manage a diverse team of Vale employees, contractors, third parties and vendors, including liaising with consultants and subject matter experts as required, to deliver on the prioritized program of business solution technologies.

About You

Education:
    \t
  • Undergraduate Degree or College Diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Experience:
    \t
  • +10 years of experience leading multidisciplinary teams, implementing IT solutions in an industrial environment (preferably in the Mining and Metals processing sector) .
  • \t
  • 5 years of experience in a technology leadership position – managing people, budgets, developing strategy objectives and actions, and being an agent of change.

Skills:
    \t
  • Strong track record of implementing technology solutions in industrial environments.
  • \t
  • Experience with change management for major systems development. Experience with building a functional unit and integrating it into an existing organization.
  • \t
  • Experience in identification of technology solutions, performing system design, and building development estimates.
  • \t
  • Strong track record in managing project teams that implement IT solutions in production environments. Broad current IT knowledge/experience in the Production Systems area ( PIMS, LIMS, MES, Mine Systems, IT/OT and Production Plant Applications). Solid understanding of IT technologies and the software development life cycle.
  • \t
  • Knowledge of the Mines systems landscape and the leading vendors in Mining solutions (Mine Planning/Design, Tracking, Telemetry, OSI PI, etc.) is an asset
  • \t
  • Knowledge of Process Control (DCS, SCADA & PLC) systems, Advanced Analytics tool sets (for example SPSS, Python, R, Matlab, etc.), and Industrial Internet of Things solutions is desirable.
  • \t
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential.
