Job Description:

Summary:

The person in this position will work in Barr's Minneapolis office as part of our Corporate Accounting group. This individual will have the opportunity to play a key role in a variety of accounting functions including audit, general ledger, payroll, reporting, and tax. They will work closely with senior members of the accounting group and will support a variety of internal stakeholders, from entry-level employees to our management team and board of directors. An emphasis on learning, problem-solving, client service, collaboration, communications, and accurate work is crucial for this role.

Specific duties will include:
  • Providing support for the company's audit function to help manage regularly scheduled annual audits, in addition to pop-up audits that are typically initiated by clients, tax jurisdictions, and others with audit authority.
  • Assisting with the general ledger activities in a multi-company and multi-currency environment (US and Canadian). This includes participating in the periodic and year-end closing activities, reconciling key general ledger accounts, and preparing periodic and year-end journal entries as input to the general ledger.
  • Assisting with the company's paid time off tracking and reporting process.
  • Responsibility for internal reporting to support management and business unit needs. For example, this person will prepare reports directly from our accounting systems along with ad hoc reporting using query tools and spreadsheets. At times, this individual may also be asked to help users interpret and use the information provided in the reports.
  • Assisting with tax compliance requirements for both domestic and Canadian tax filing obligations, including sales and use tax, corporate income tax, goods and services tax, and more. This will include interaction with an external accounting firm for outsourced filings.
  • Providing support for the business planning process, including planning for new fiscal year along with periodic updates and plan revisions.
  • Completing a variety of other, related tasks as requested.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
  • 2 or more years of experience related to the responsibilities above
  • Knowledge of general accepted accounting principles
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and experience with advanced functions of Excel
  • ERP system experience
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional technical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven commitment to providing work that is accurate and complete with appropriate attention to detail
  • A flexible working style, able to work both independently and in teams
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
  • Acceptable driving record.

  • Work experience in a professional services organization
  • Work experience in a project accounting-based environment
  • Experience applying tax principles and practices for businesses
  • Experience working with multiple currencies
  • Experience working with query-based tools that require knowledge of database structures, tables, joins, and criteria statements
