This in-person position is performed onsite at Freeport-McMoRan's corporate office in Phoenix, Arizona. Description

Under limited supervision, provide geotechnical engineering support and project management related to design, construction, and operation of crushed ore heap leach pads, tailings storage facilities, storm water ponds, mining infrastructure foundations, etc. and serve as company resource for geotechnical information and analysis

  • Perform critical review of technical reports, analyses, design plans, specifications, cost estimates and develop appropriate recommendations. Stay abreast of the state of the practice in geotechnical engineering to fulfill this role
  • Manage projects and serve as subject matter expert (SME) on large/complex site planning/construction, expansion or modifications. Provide guidance to site managers and engineers on applicable programs, practices, and regulations
  • Supervise in-the-field effort on site reconnaissance, geologic mapping, geotechnical drilling, geotechnical profiling, geotechnical instrumentation, construction quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) activities for design and construction of crushed ore leach pads, tailings embankments, foundations, and/or other mining infrastructure
  • Contribute to strategic planning and budgeting efforts for designated engineering areas
  • Proactively seek improvements to the safe and geotechnically stable construction and operation of crushed ore leach pads, tailings storage facilities, storm water ponds, etc. and communicate relevant geotechnical information to operational management team and staff
  • Evaluate and administer contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment
  • Represent the site on company sponsored steering committees, task forces, or teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires air travel.   • Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, with courses in soil mechanics and foundation engineering and seven(7) years of experience in applicable field of expertise, including lead or supervisory experience, OR
  • Master's Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, with courses in soil mechanics and foundation engineering and five (5) years of experience in applicable field of expertise, including lead or supervisory experience
  • Knowledge in the principles and practices of civil, geological, and/or geotechnical engineering or a related field of science or engineering
  • Expertise in modeling and numerical approaches to solving engineering challenges.
  • Knowledge of appropriate software (MS Office, AutoCAD, and geotechnical analysis)
  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to a diversely educated audience
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others
  • Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards


Preferred
  • Master's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Experience in crushed ore heap leach facility design and operation
  • Field experience in earth embankment construction monitoring and quality assurance
  • Field experience in geotechnical site investigations, including crushed ore heap leach and tailings material
  • Experience in soil characterization, interpretation of geotechnical lab tests, and engineering analysis on crushed ore heap leach and tailings material
  • Demonstrated experience in two or more practice areas relevant to tailings and crush leach (e.g. geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, slurry transport, seismology, construction management, etc.)
  • Project Management experience
  • Proficiency in using geotechnical software
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally
  • Ability and willingness to travel at least 5 weeks for every quarter
