Reporting to the Manager of Technical Services, the Chief Tailings Engineer leads the Tailings Engineering team and is responsible for the stewardship of the tailings and water facilities at the Highland Valley Copper mine site. The position has responsibility for water and tailings facility performance inspection, monitoring, and reporting, as well as facility design, quality assurance, planning, and closure. The position is also responsible for complying with tailings governance requirements, including Teck-internal guidance, the Mining Association of Canada Towards Sustainable Mining, and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management. Core technical duties of the role are facility performance, planning, construction quality, and governance.

This position fulfills the role of Tailings Qualified Person and Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer. Sharing department management with the Dam Construction Superintendent, this position requires leading a technical team of engineers and technicians as well as managing external parties including the Engineer of Record, design team, and Tailings Review Board, and liaising with a wide variety of key stakeholders. There are 34 dams on the Highland Valley Copper site including one of the largest cyclone sand dams in North America, making this position exciting and of critical importance for Teck!  

To be successful, we require someone with strong interpersonal, and communication skills, who can influence others and build positive relationships across multiple operations and groups. We are looking for an adaptable professional with leadership and mentoring skills, who can prioritize demands in a fast-paced environment and has strong technical writing skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.  
  • Lead the tailings engineering team including the core duties of facility performance monitoring, planning, quality assurance, and governance. Provide opportunities, guidance and mentorship to develop their skills.  
  • Maintain the Tailings Engineering budget and forecast, including projects carried out by supporting groups.  
  • Foster a collaborative and approach among the staff and unionized employees within the team.  
  • Lead the Engineer of Record and design teams to develop effective designs, construction drawings and specifications.  
  • Coordinate the activities of the Tailings Review Board.  
  • Work closely with the dam construction team to develop and implement mid to long term construction plans and schedules, maintain construction quality, and identify efficiency and improvement initiatives.  
  • Lead or assist in planning and development of tailings and water infrastructure projects to support current operations and future opportunities, and maintain regulatory compliance.  
  • Technical writing for operations and project documents, including OMS manuals, as well as technical review of reports from external consultants.  
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and corporate governance requirements.  


Qualifications:

  • Masters in Engineering or equivalent with specialization in Geological, Geotechnical, or tailings
  • A Professional Engineering (P. Eng) designation, registered or eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (EGBC); Teck will support eligible employees with their EGBC registration 
  • 10+ years varied work experience in related and complimentary field. Experience at an operating site and with dam construction is an asset.
