We are currently seeking a Mining Engineer to consistently provide reliable, accurate and sustainable mine planning services and support in order to position Mining and Plant operations for optimal performance.

Rio Tinto Weipa is located 900km north-west of Cairns on the Gulf of Carpentaria and has been operating for over 50 years. Over the years, it has developed into a vibrant and diverse cultural hub of the Western Cape. Weipa offers a coastal community rich in geographical beauty and cultural heritage that provides families with opportunities to participate in leisure activities, sports and community events. With a strong sense of community, the region has plenty of natural beauty to offer including the opportunities for boating, fishing, camping and exploring.

The Amrun Mine Site is located 40 kilometers south west of Weipa with a life expectancy of 40 plus years to expand our bauxite operations and continue production from one of the world's premier bauxite deposits. This expansion will strengthen the economy and provide exciting opportunities for the people of Cape York and Queensland for future generations.

The principal role accountability is to produce the Weekly Plan with the aim of maintaining planned grades and production tonnes for Amrun Operations. Reporting to the Senior Mining Engineer, the main components of achieving the minimum required standard include:
  • Producing accurate mine scheduling information for integrated operations.
  • Completing production area maps for grade control.
  • Communicating planning material to Mine Planning, Mine and Plant Operations and Field Maintenance personnel
  • Providing relevant maps (dump floor, dumps, parent shapes, clearing, accesses, development, ancillary tasks) and machine guidance files as required to implement dig and dump plans.
  • Completing and communicating weekly plan reconciliation.
  • Liaising with Supervisors and Superintendents to ensure plan implementation.
  • Managing plan deviations to maintain grades and tonnes. Ensure such changes are properly communicated to peers and direct report.
  • Maintaining effective communication between site and peers.
  • Develop and mentor step up new starters, Graduate Engineers and Vacation Students

What you'll bring
  • Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering Civil Engineering or Geology
  • Detailed understanding of Open Cut operations
  • Practical understanding of mining design and scheduling.
  • Basic understanding of supply chain management.
  • Sound level of proficiency in basic business software (Excel, Word and PowerPoint or similar)
  • High level of proficiency in CAD mining software, preferably Deswik or similar
  • Excellent numerical analysis and data validation skills
  • Knowledge of relevant mining legislation and industry practices

Where you will be working

Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tonnes of bauxite.

Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce-including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.

The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape.
