About the role

We are looking for a Principal Advisor Planning to supervise and deliver all planning services for the Energy Development portfolio of renewable projects. You will support the Senior Principal Advisor Planning to implement and provide ongoing support of all planning systems, functions and projects within the Energy Development portfolio. The Rio Tinto Energy Development team is accountable for delivering the large-scale renewable (primarily wind and solar) solutions required across our major energy regions.

The scope of the planning function includes planning, reporting, developing benchmarking, reviewing schedules prepared by the project team, document control and managing relevant project processes and procedures. You will provide expert advice and support for projects that warrant dedicated strategic leadership from within the owner's team.

Reporting to the Senior Principal Advisor Planning and working within a collaborative and exciting environment, you will:
  • Establish the standard for planning and assess performance against the standard in study and implementation phases
  • Assist in the development and improvement of Rio Tinto Project's approach to planning
  • Oversee the Conceptual, Order-of-Magnitude, Pre-feasibility Study and Feasibility Study planning as required
  • Foster a relationship of trust and respect with product group stakeholders, EPCM teams, contractors and project services teams
  • Act as a knowledge custodian, developing historical schedule understanding from across the group and disseminating into projects and business units
  • Proactively provide guidance and support to project teams and other areas of the business as appropriate
  • Provide technical, strategic and leadership support and constructively challenge study and project teams to foster a culture of continuous improvement
  • Provide independent schedule assurance on studies at the end of each study phase, as outlined by the governance framework
  • Support in maintaining awareness of and adherence to the Rio Tinto Projects accountability Model
  • Participate in Schedule Risk Analysis workshops and Technical Evaluation Group (TEG) reviews as required
  • Proactively develop a service-provider culture whilst identifying important issues, acting with integrity to resolve them, and escalating as required

What you will bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Demonstrable experience as a Project Planner within the EPCM and Contractor space with a solid understanding of study and execution phase planning
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or commensurate level of practical experience
  • Exposure to planning within the mining, power generation and transmission, renewable energy and construction industries
  • Proficiency in the use of Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project Software
  • Well-developed ability to constructively and critically analysis schedules and provide appropriate feedback
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement and influencing capability with a collaborative relationship building approach
  • Excellent written and spoken verbal communication and presentation skills
  • An understanding of project controls principles and practices would be well regarded

Where you will be working

Rio Tinto's Development and Technology (D&T) group engages and partner with Rio Tinto businesses across 73 operating sites, 35 countries and 6 continents to help create value, manage risk and innovate for the future, whilst providing range of support and services functions, to ensure technical optimisation, establish and transfer best practices, develop strategies to drive performance improvements, and ensure that technical innovation provides a source of long-term competitive advantage.

Rio Tinto Projects helps to grow our business by building new mines and assets as well as studying the different options for both new construction projects and operations approaching closure. We are recognised for delivering safely, on time and on budget or better, and have won multiple awards for our work, including at the Amrun Bauxite mine in North Queensland, Australia, and on the AutoHaul driverless trains in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

The role can be based in either the Brisbane or Perth Australia Corporate Offices. A flexible working arrangement is in place with a balance of office-based and work from home. Periodic domestic and international travel is a requirement for this role.
