Superintendent, Mine Maintenance

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Mining Manager, the Superintendent, Mine Maintenance will be responsible to provide strategic direction and management of all maintenance including directing and overseeing, either personally or through subordinate supervisors, the activities of employees, safety, administration, planning and equipment maintenance. The role will focus on organizing team development, roster and schedule development, and site development of maintenance practices, policies and procedures. The position also monitors costs, productivity, safety, environmental compliance and employee morale.

As this is a start-up operation, the successful candidate must have a strong focus on employee development and establishment of a robust maintenance program to help achieve increased productivity and to maximize return on investment and in compliance with corporate objectives.

MAGINO MINE:

The Magino Project is a brown-fields site located in northern Ontario, Canada that contains an historical underground gold mine, and tailings management facility ("TMF"). The Corporation has conducted a Feasibility Study during 2017 that examined mining the deposit using conventional open pit mining methods and extraction of gold from the ore using a 10,000 tonnes per day carbon-in-pulp ("CIP") mineral processing facility. When developed, Magino will produce around 150,000 ounces of gold during the first five years of production. The project has over a 15-year mine production life (including one year of pre-production).

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for the day-to-day mine maintenance operations at Magino, including the daily coordination of the activities of the crews. Maintain overall control of the mine maintenance operations.
  • Communicate planned maintenance activities with the mine operations department to ensure the long-term viability of the fleet.
  • Maintain compliance with corporate, governmental and site environmental and safety policies, procedures, and regulations. Create awareness of unsafe and/or environmentally harmful behaviour.
  • Develop and manage safety-based and performance-based staff. Ensure that direct reports understand their work and their roles.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with department heads, engineers, shift supervisors, direct reports, trainers, safety and environmental personnel, mine services, etc.
  • Set priorities and execute the safe and efficient deployment of personnel and equipment in all maintenance activities.
  • Review performance data, and develop and implement changes necessary to enhance safety, improve productivity, and lower production costs.
  • Look for opportunities to improve employee safety and awareness. Review and communicate risk management situations. Lead by example by wearing correct personal protective equipment (PPE) and by following all established safety procedures.
  • Ensure that safety incidents are thoroughly investigated, notification procedures and protocols are followed, and recommendations implemented. Take corrective action where necessary to address non-compliance.
  • Identify, encourage, and manage training requirements / development opportunities for the employees and direct reports. Work closely with the training, safety, and environmental departments to ensure that training requirements are being met.
  • Provide effective feedback to direct reports and other assigned personnel on performance and expectations, on a consistent and on-going basis.
  • Conduct employee reviews in a fair and honest manner and assist direct reports in resolving disputes/concerns and other employee issues in a timely manner; or submit them to senior management for action.
  • Provide direction for employees to grow and develop while motivating them to reach their maximum potential. Encourage employees to be fully engaged and understand how to contribute to the overall success of Magino.
  • Make recommendations in relation to measuring and improving production methods, employee and equipment performance / efficiency, working conditions, and the quality of the work produced.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 10+ years related maintenance experience.
  • 5+ years mine maintenance supervisory experience, with some open pit experience and/or heavy earthworks construction considered highly desirable.
  • Possess an interprovincial trade qualification (Required).
  • Strong familiarity with the Magino mobile mine fleet (CAT haul trucks, dozers, loaders and support equipment).
  • Thorough working knowledge of efficient maintenance techniques and procedures that conform to applicable Company, Provincial and Federal safety regulations.
  • Computer proficiency including computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), with knowledge of SAP preferred.
  • Effective leadership and organizational skills with the ability to build a strong team culture.
  • Good work ethic and a strong attitude towards safety are essential requirements.
  • Degree of assertiveness with ability to give direction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with all levels of the operation.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Detail-oriented with sound problem-solving ability.
  • Proven record of quality work and execution of projects and plans including managing subcontractors.
  • Must be field oriented and able to work in mines and exploration environments.
  • G Class Driver’s License (Required).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • The role is located at the Magino Mine, which is approximately 88 kilometers northeast of Wawa, Ontario, Canada-
  • The ideal candidate for the role will work a rotation of 4 days on and 3 off (10-hour days).
  • Although you will be assigned a work schedule, this is not a guaranteed schedule of hours and your work hours may vary with the needs of the company.
  • As a Management position you will be required to manage your time on site effectively in line with the requirements of the job.
