PRIMARY PURPOSE

Reporting to the Chief Mine Engineer, the Pit Engineer/Pit Planner needs to be knowledgeable in all aspects of mine designs which includes pit walls, dumps, blasting and infrastructure. They are the liaison between Mine Management, Engineering and all Departments ensuring that there is constant communication regarding all plans concerning Mine Operations. This is achieved by spending time in the field with Mine Management and Supervision to ensure engineered plans are understood and carried out safely, efficiently and cost effectively.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Time in field every morning (first thing) with Superintendent.
  • Ensure all mine designs are followed in the field.
  • Develop the monthly mine plans, including the 13-week forecast, by ensuring all department requirements are met regarding plant cleaning, shipping requirements, maintenance of equipment requirements, environmental concerns with regards to water quality and reclamation, operations manpower and equipment availability.
  • Ensure Upload mine/dump designs on the Wenco system or surveyed (stakes) in the field for proper construction and make sure the operations following the lines.
  • Be knowledgeable in geotechnical aspects of Pit wall, dump and haul road designs, supply field info to and work closely with planning engineers on the design work.
  • Ensure drill & blasts activities are following proper practices and design through field inspection and supply feedback to D&B engineers.
  • Provide recommendations to engineering team on the planning and designing to ensure that operations can carry out the work safely and productively.
  • Forward looking shipping requirements, maintenance of equipment requirements, and environmental concerns to ensure that volumes moved will meet the planned coal release over the next 3 to 6 months. Identify problem areas in the plans further out and provide feedback to engineering team for plans updating.
  • Monitoring the plan execution and supply improvement opportunities/solutions for operating efficiencies and productivities.
  • Understand the Provincial regulations regarding engineering and communicate these requirements to all departments.
  • Support operations on technical issues and optimum mining to maximize production and reduce cost.
  • Manage improvement projects recommended by engineering team.

  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships, internally.
  • Quick learner and adaptable to an ever-changing environment.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.Sc. Mining Engineering.
  • P. Eng. or on track towards P. Eng.
  • Minimum 1-5 years of progressive experience in mine design, operations and engineering in an operating mine environment.
