We are currently looking to fill the Director, Project Controls role for our Canadian Mining & Metallurgy sector and USA Mining & Metallurgy sector (until a separate org structure for the USA is developed). This individual will be responsible for the leadership of the Project Controls Management group and project-based responsibilities and will report to the Sr. Director Operations M&M Canada.

How will you contribute to the team?

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
  • Foster a spirit of enthusiasm, technical innovation, client focus, team building and continual improvement.
  • Lead the strategic planning and development of the department in Canada through a deep understanding of the business environment, competitive pressures, customer requirements and market trends.
  • Plan and control the work of the department and sub-departments by ensuring projects are sufficiently staffed per project schedules with personnel with specific project technical needs.
  • Maintain and develop the appropriate skill sets of the department and sub-departments. Ensure department personnel are qualified and have the required experience level to support the project needs of the business unit.
  • Make decisions and recommendations on general project controls management issues based on recommendations and input from staff members.
  • Promote staff participation in conferences and seminars by developing professional papers, serving on professional panels and presenting at conferences (if applicable).
  • Keep up-to-date with industry standards and technology related to the project management and mining industry. This also includes project management software and systems and identifying new tools to improve efficiencies and Client offerings.
  • Establish a yearly training program to ensure the project controls team is up-to-date with the industry's best practices.
  • Participate in the establishment of departmental budgets and control expenditures within those budgets.
  • Develop, monitor and improve department work processes and tools. Establish innovative approaches to improve department efficiencies in carrying out project control activities.
  • Review project discipline performance on projects and propose an action plan to realign the results in the event of unsatisfactory performance.
  • Ensure that all project controls personnel adhere to SNC-Lavalin quality assurance procedures and programs. Perform quality audits on projects per the established QA program and ensure the timely implementation of all identified corrective actions.
  • Review or perform employee performance evaluations with front-line supervisors and recommend applicable classification/salary adjustments.
  • Monitor overall productivity and efficiency of the project controls department, forecast trends and anticipate potential problems and difficulties in meeting project milestones or budgets.
  • Provide weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports to and share important information with business leaders.
  • Participate in preparing and reviewing proposals, particularly project reporting needs and execution plans.
  • Set strategic objectives and monitor the progress toward these objectives.
  • Manage all hiring within the department and support sub-department managers with staffing requirements.
  • Establish and maintain good client relations and promote the Company's reputation as a successful Engineering & Design Consultant, EPCM & PMC consultant.
  • Implement effective department communications with all stakeholders, holding department and project functional leads accountable to keep their project team members informed on significant issues affecting their discipline.
  • Supervise project controls personnel in several offices of a region. Ensure that the Company and Sector's strategic direction is reflected in the growth and development of the department within the region.
  • Adhere to, support and promote the Company Quality Management System, HSE requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain a climate favourable to applying ethical and professional practices in executing the project controls work.
  • Work as a leader as Project Controls Manager on projects, as needed to ensure a satisfactory level of billability is maintained within the M&M Canadian operations.


Requirements
  • Relevant Education (for Eng, we have "Bachelor's Degree in any Engineering discipline.")
  • Relevant Professional Qualifications (for Eng, we have "P.Eng status in any Canadian province.")
  • 15-20+ years of relevant experience, including experience in Management and supervisory roles.
  • Must possess broad experience in executing multi-discipline engineering work on large/complex projects across the complete EPC/EPCM lifecycle.
  • Must possess a comprehensive understanding of the Mining and Metals businesses, be thoroughly familiar with typical business and contract models employed in the industry and hold a wide network of professional industry contacts.
  • Demonstrate implementing innovative approaches to project controls management execution in past roles.
