Summary:

Barr is seeking a senior environmental engineer or scientist to undertake challenging work that supports environmental and regulatory compliance for our clients. This person will have the opportunity to work on large and complex projects that may involve site investigations, regulatory and technical analyses, solution development, report writing, and communicating with regulatory and community stakeholders.

Key job activities will likely include:
  • Lead and work with multidisciplinary project teams developing project plans for site investigations, compliance monitoring, and regulatory assessments, which will include identifying scopes of work, writing fieldwork plans, and managing project budgets.
  • Manage project teams, schedule commitments, assign work tasks, review the work quality of team members, and provide feedback.
  • Work with Barr's clients to understand their environmental issues and develop technical solutions with input from project teams.
  • Demonstrate leadership in safety, including developing safe work plans, communicating client safety requirements, and conducting safety inspections.
  • Reviewing and providing guidance on environmental regulations including but not limited to those pertaining to the Alberta Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act , the Water Act and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act .
  • Communicating with regulators regarding permitting and/or compliance strategies.


Barr may consider a remote working arrangement based on candidate qualifications. The work may involve out-of-town assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, or related science degree
  • 8 years of professional experience working in site investigation, environmental monitoring, environmental compliance, or similar experience
  • Demonstrated project management success
  • Technical knowledge of federal and provincial environmental regulations as well as familiarity with their application
  • Experience with the oil sands, petroleum refining, pipeline, and/or mining industries
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients
  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill commitments on schedule and to do what it takes to meet client's service expectations and requirements
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills, including attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness, as well as a commitment to producing high-quality deliverables
  • Effectiveness in building working relationships and working on multidisciplinary project teams
  • A flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Self-initiative and motivation, with an emphasis on client service and cultivating a career in environmental consulting
  • Acceptable driving record, if applicable
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Aptitude for developing client relationships and business
  • Ability to identify problem symptoms and causes and develop and evaluate alternative solutions
  • Ability to process complex or rapidly developing information to extract key issues and implications and develop appropriate strategies
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.), Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.), Professional Biologist (P. Biol.), or as a Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.) in Alberta or another province or eligible to become registered within a year
  • Experience working with teams across wide geographical areas


NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and facilities that have limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring the cleanup of hazardous materials. A physical exam may be required; safety training will be provided.
