Job Description:

Summary:

The person selected for this position will work on geotechnical engineering projects for mine tailings storage facilities involving geotechnical and civil analysis and design related seepage, slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, earth retention, and dams. The work will include performing geotechnical computer modeling; specifying and interpreting soil and rock investigations, including drilling and cone penetrometer testing; overseeing on-site and laboratory material testing; and installing instrumentation. Work also involves completing geotechnical and civil aspects of alternatives analyses and feasibility studies as well as preparing plans and specifications, reports, and cost estimates. The position also entails fieldwork, such as construction observation, subsurface investigations, in-situ testing, surveying, facility inspections, and managing selected project tasks for scope, schedule, and budget compliance. In addition, this position requires periodic out-of-town assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis
  • 0 - 3 years of traditional geotechnical engineering work experience
  • Strong geotechnical analysis and design skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Willingness and ability to regularly travel
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more
  • Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Geotechnical computer modeling capabilities
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States
  • Acceptable driving record


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering with additional coursework or research related to mine tailings and tailings storage facilities, dam engineering, or advanced soil mechanics
  • 1+ years of geotechnical design experience
  • Training or work experience in engineering of tailings storage facilities or other dam facilities
  • Training or work experience with filtered tailings storage facilities and filtered tailings characterization, including an understanding of unsaturated soil mechanics
  • Training or work experience in field work such as construction observation, subsurface investigations, in-situ testing, instrumentation installation, surveying, materials testing, or facility inspections
  • Task management skills
  • Interest in mining engineering, power generation facilities, and fuels industries
  • Computer skills with gINT, AutoCAD, and/or statistical analysis software
  • Work experience with geotechnical analysis and geotechnical computer modeling or other related software (FLAC, Plaxis, midas GTS NX, SoilVision, and/or GeoStudio)


Compensation:

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000 annually. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus. NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and must be able to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Position will require lifting or moving field testing equipment. Safety training will be provided prior to being given work assignments on these sites. Applicants will be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of clients.
