About Potash

BHP’s Jansen Potash Project located approximately 140 km east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is BHP’s first and most advanced potash project. Jansen will add diversity and a Canadian presence to BHP’s global portfolio. Jansen’s large resource endowment provides the opportunity to develop it in stages, with anticipated initial capacity of 4.35 Mtpa. The BHP Board has recently sanctioned Jansen Project (Stage 1), with a US $5.7 billion investment. The project is now entering the construction phase, with the first potash expected in 2027.

Purpose

The Principal Commissioning will lead a portfolio of work designed to support our current and future project execution activities in Saskatchewan and our Port and Rail scope on the West Coast. The candidate will bring a strong background in Commissioning activities, digital project delivery, and demonstrated leadership in strategic planning and execution of these activities. 

About the Role

In this role, you will:

  • Support HSE performance through proactive leadership, apply BHP's risk management framework and build a risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes
  • Lead and facilitate the development and maintenance of Commissioning strategy, standards, processes, and plans for a major capital project
  • Support the development and execution of a capital optimization program, identifying improvement initiatives to increase capital efficiency and productivity within the commissioning program
  • Provide commissioning expertise and coordinate resources deployed into a study team for the development of commissioning related deliverables, including but not limited to plans, processes, and procedures
  • Act as a single point of contact for the Project or Study manager for all commissioning deliverables and inputs
  • Coordinate the execution of commissioning methodologies, strategies and plans in accordance with program\project systems and standards
  • Support and conduct data-analytics on all aspects of commissioning execution, optimization, and improvement projects
  • Lead value creation through application of continuous improvement techniques to program standards and procedures
  • Monitor the planned, actual, and forecast resource levels to support project execution
  • Lead, coach, and mentor team members to ensure delivery against performance targets
  • Coordinate execution of risk and quality management plans to assure effective management of the project’s commissioning scope of work
  • Provide expertise as input to value improvement practices such as integrated planning, in partnership with project functions such as engineering, operations readiness, procurement and project controls and analysis
  • Provide “point of contact” between the commissioning stakeholders and the existing operating facilities to ensure minimal disruption to both Operations and construction/commissioning activities
  • Maintain a wide network of influence, and integrate functions, operations, and regions, and 
  • Solve complex challenges to drive strong functional/asset integration across BHP, to engage the capabilities of the entire organization
  • Identify, engage, and manage a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders
  • Prioritize work effort and resources accordingly
  • Determine the underlying cause of problems and evaluates multiple solutions to ensure a planned and structured approach to solving complex problems
  • Strive to achieve 100% safety, 100% customer value and 0% waste

Work Location

Downtown, Saskatoon; 40 hours per week, parking is provided on-site. This role will require regular travel to the Jansen site and Vancouver, BC. 

About You

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Civil/Structural, Mechanical or Electrical) or Journeyperson’s Certificate (Electrical, Millwright, Construction, Commissioning)
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered as equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Relevant commissioning experience in a major projects or program environment at a Contractor and EPC(m) level
  • Experience at the owner level, in the Energy or Mining sector would be advantageous
  • Deep functional knowledge of industry leading HSE, constructability, construction & commissioning planning, and technology practices in a multi discipline engineering and site construction environment including 3D data centric platforms
  • Experience in study-related projects including industrial potash plant, bulk handling, and marine terminal construction
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage, influence and build solid working relationships with stakeholders, peers, vendors, fabricators, engineering, construction and commissioning contractors
