About the role

We are looking for a Sampler Surveyor Mine Sample Preparation Facility to assist in the day-to-day tasks of in-pit sample collection, preparation and analysis. This role will be responsible for ensuring that all samples meet specific criteria which allows for the delivery of quality and efficient analytical results, which are a key component to the process, providing operations with critical information for optimizing the day-to-day operation. Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper (RTKC) is a poly-metallic mining / minerals processing company, fully owned by Rio Tinto. RTKC is committed to producing its products in a capable and controlled manner, while demonstrating continuous improvement in areas that create value. The Mine sample preparation facility provides service and support to the RTKC value stream through the acquisition and processing of 200-300 blasthole samples each day. This role is a great opportunity to work in a role as a Sampler Surveyor and reporting to the Superintendent-Site Labs, you will be:
  • Contributing to a Zero Harm safety culture, free from incidents.
  • Collecting, Logging and Processing in-pit blasthole samples.
  • Analyzing and verifying blasthole sample results and quality.
  • Operating mobile equipment on plant property to access the areas of the pit and on the highway for delivery to Central Lab.
  • Conduct specific sample preparation and analyses using both manual and semi-automated equipment along with NIR and other techniques for sample analysis.
  • Prepare quality control samples, analytical standards and duplicates.
  • Participate in Method Development, validations, and certification activities as well as the commissioning of new equipment. Interpret and adapt existing methods to improve the efficiency, accuracy and quality.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, routine audits, trouble shooting and continuous improvement projects.
  • Utilize analytical methods, standard operating procedures, and laboratory data systems to ensure data integrity, compliance, and good laboratory practices. Utilize in field tablets for the documentation of sample status.
  • Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation issues and method QC failures while applying data integrity and good laboratory practices.
  • Understand, interpret, and adapt existing methods to improve data accuracy and precision.
  • Must perform additional duties as assigned.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will:
  • Possess a High School Diploma or the equivalent laboratory experience.
  • Possess a Driver's license to allow sample delivery to the Central Lab.
  • Be self-motivated to learn new techniques and instrumentation and seeks advice / support from more experienced staff.
  • Have knowledge and experience with Lean 5S concepts.
  • Understand and have basic knowledge of processing techniques and equipment
  • Have the ability to understand and follow Standard Operating Procedures
  • Be skilled in use of computer operations including Word and Excel, and the ability to learn laboratory specific protocols including custom software. Experience with RTVis and Acquire would be considered a plus.
  • Manage workflows for completing analyses to meet schedule requirements.
  • Be able to take neat legible record keeping, a safe-work attitude and proficient writing and computer skills are mandatory attributes.
