Reporting to the Lead Planner, the Project Planning Specialist will be part of one or more project teams performing the required duties of a planner in Teck’s Coal Water Program. Projects in this program typically range from $50M to more than $200M. This role will support projects in the study (up to and including Feasibility) and execution (Detailed Design, Construction). For projects in Construction, there is an expectation to travel to the site regularly. This hands-on role requires the development of schedules in Primavera and providing schedule expertise and guidance to the Project team.

For each project assignment, the Project Planning Specialist is accountable to the Teck project team (via Project Controls Manager or Project Controls Lead, as appropriate) for the planning and implementation of effective scheduling/planning resources, processes, and systems on the project, within the standards set by the Lead Planner. This may involve a self-execute approach or collaboration with Teck’s EPCM partners.

Project Planning includes schedule planning and development, reviews, resource allocation, progress and performance measurement, schedule analysis, forecasting and status reporting.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Maintain and demonstrate Teck’s commitment to safety and environmental protection as core values.

On a project assignment:
  • Responsible for developing and reviewing schedule management plans, baseline schedule submissions and basis of schedules for all project stages.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a project master schedule. This includes developing L3/L4 schedules on Teck and SERA's scope of work.
  • Responsible for performing quality reviews on third-party schedules.
    • Reviews schedules for consistency, realism, and quality.
    • Identifies critical and near-critical paths and understands float usage on third-party schedules.
    • Recommends corrective actions and supervises their implementation.
    • Integrates third-party schedules into the master schedule.
  • Responsible for identifying schedule deviations on the scope with the package owner and working with the package owner to identify and implement mitigations.
  • Responsible for supporting monthly forecasting, as directed by Project Controls Lead (Manager).
  • Responsible for providing schedule input to help the project team define project execution plans and scope. Runs multiple “What if” Schedule scenarios as options evolve
  • Responsible for supporting project reporting and presentations, as directed by Project Controls Lead (Manager).
  • Responsible for performing scheduling audits on service providers, as appropriate.
  • Responsible for ensuring PDG Project Controls Overviews and Standards are properly applied and followed on a project with respect to Planning.
  • Provides guidance and training on project planning, scheduling methods, procedures, and systems as required.


Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in engineering, computer science, finance or business, or a diploma in a trade, is required.
  • 7+ years of planning/scheduling experience, with a preference for mining/industrial projects, is required.
  • 3+ years experience in an Owner’s role is required.
  • 1+ years of field experience is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in planning/scheduling development, review and analysis are required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management theory, especially in time and cost management, is required. Strong understanding in the areas of project planning, activity duration estimating, CPM schedule preparation, schedule analysis and schedule system application are essential. Experience in progress measurement and earned value measurement systems is preferred
  • Strong knowledge of the engineering and construction industry is required
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are required.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in developing and progressing resource-loaded schedules in Primavera P6 is required.
  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and uncertainty with project scopes.
  • PEng or AScT registration is considered an asset.
  • CCP, CEP, PMP or other similar designations are considered an asset.
