About the role

We are looking for a Health and Safety Business Partner to lead a team of Health and Safety Professionals to develop and implement Health and Safety programs to support the Metals Operations and Projects and Engineering in managing Health and Safety risks. This role will provide the technical oversight of the Health and Safety activities at an operational and project level and serves as the recognized expert in matters relating to Health and Safety across the Metals end of the business.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Manager with Health and Safety, Operational and Projects experience in mining, processing, or a similar environment to join a dynamic team. This position is accountable for delivery of robust Health and Safety performance for the Smelter, Refinery, Rail Operations, Projects and Engineering and the Functional and Technical teams that support the operations and projects across Kennecott.

The Health and Safety Business Partner is a critical enabler of our networked organization. The role will partner and collaborate with our stakeholders, inclusive of the operational assets, the broader Copper product group, Area of Expertise supporting the assets, Functional partners, and the Centre of Excellence teams. The assets however being at the core to manage risk, eliminate or minimize harm and enhance value while delivering on the business priorities.

The RTK Health and Safety Business partner for operations role is designed to integrate work at the operational level to avoid duplication and improve the site safety performance through delivery of standardized processes in line with our plan. Reporting to the Senior Health and Safety Business Partner and working in a challenging and exciting environment within the Health and Safety department you will:
  • Lead a diverse team of professionals responsible for Health and Safety
  • Coach, train, develop and support the development of high performing H&S professionals to provide a legacy of experience for the safe operations of Kennecott into the future
  • Foster strong H&S capability within the H&S team, supporting partners and across the Operational and Project teams
  • Manage extensive and complex risks, impacts, mitigations, and investment opportunities pertaining to the Kennecott operations and large-scale projects and shutdowns
  • Adapt project and operational strategies, objectives, and context into a H&S implementation plans
  • Provide direct business partner support to operational leadership teams
  • Ensure operational, projects and shutdown compliance with relevant H&S policies and standards
  • Support the Operational and Project Leadership development and coaching programs fostering an authentic respectful, and collaborative workplace culture founded on trust to consistently deliver Operational and Project outcomes.
  • Ensure robust H&S targets and metrics are in place, actively monitors and reported in accordance with agreed requirements and governing legislative bodies.
  • Communicate regularly with key stakeholders including site management, supervisors and operational employees regarding Occupational Health and Safety obligations, plans and performance improvement
  • Participate (where required) in work package, shutdown readiness reviews to assist with demonstrating H&S readiness for field execution
  • Implementation of the 'Critical Risk Management' (CRM) and the 'Safety Maturity Model' (SMM) to ensure H&S and Leadership requirements are being met
  • Participate to the deployment of the Safe Production System
  • Working with our contractor partners to ensure understanding and compliance to site H&S commitments.
  • Lead the development and implementation of targeted health and safety improvement initiatives. Championing the safety culture and continuous improvement through building relationships with stakeholders at all levels across the business, identifying education and training needs and appropriate solutions.
  • Where appropriate, acts as the lead investigator for any serious incident at the operations or projects
  • Standardize and align core HS activities, such as incident and action management, risk assessment and assurance across the operation

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • 7-10 years in HSE, Operational or technical leadership role.
  • Demonstrate considerable experience in a similar role, ideally in the Mining, oil and gas, or heavy engineering industry
  • College/University Education: Science, engineering, or related field
  • Formal training in recognized incident investigation processes
  • Experience in mining, processing plants and smelting operations is desirable
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with stakeholders internally and externally at all levels
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills, and confidence to operate at all levels of the business.
  • Experience in working with regulators and stakeholders within Riot Tinto and Community.
  • Ability to work in multi-functional and multi-disciplinary teams and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Well-developed sense of urgency and conviction at maintaining operational compliance.
  • Successfully demonstrate coaching stakeholder group/s
  • Operational experience in areas of -Projects / Shutdowns /Processing /Refining and Rail
  • Demonstrated ability to take a system and strategic view to identify and manage emerging risks
  • Experience in leading, coaching and developing direct reports
